Nonetheless both SWT and SWR bought a lot to the table and managed to run a heavy commuter railway with a lot of competing interests very effectively indeed. Nationalisation is not required at all. Bring back rail privatisation.

A few years back I watched Sir Mark Hopwood being interviewed regarding SWR. Apparently SWT started to decline....

@stuart_rock @SW_Help @swtrains_watch Under the now demised system of privatisation, such persistent failure would see a franchise being removed from the TOC. This is no longer the case under nationalisation. HMG has brought a terrible way of running a railway. @Heidi_Labour @andyburnham
