- Arrest of Yves Engler -
Sunday night, I received word that my good friend, ally, and colleague Yves Engler is scheduled to be arrested this morning by the Montreal Police for speaking out against Zionism and the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
These charges are part of an organized campaign to silence voices advocating for peace and Palestinian human rights. The complaint against him was filed by a Zionist law firm headed by a Conservative Party of Canada candidate. The conservative leader has called for the criminalization of pro Palestinian activism in Canada.
Yves Engler is a well-respected activist, journalist, and author of 13 books. His work primarily focuses on Canadian foreign policy. He has been a regular guest on my podcast and accompanied me on part of my tour of Quebec’s war factories in 2022. He is sometimes referred to as the Noam Chomsky of Canada.
Across Canada, Zionists have attempted to weaponize the justice system to suppress pro-Palestinian voices. People have been charged for saying things like "From the river to the sea" at protests, only to have the charges dropped later.
When Yves took to social media to share the news of his pending arrest, over 2500 people emailed Montreal Police demanding they drop these politically motivated charges. The police responded with a major escalation, now promising additional charges for supposed harassment of police officers. Apparently the officer who recieved the emails felt “intimidated” and that their work was “obstructed” by receiving these emails… So they added extra criminal charges to his case for that. I don’t know why they would not just delete the emails if they did not want to see them and I don’t understand how they would be surprised that scheduling the arrest of a well known public figure, for political speech in a free and democratic society like Canada would lead to a few emails being sent to them.
We cannot allow this injustice to go unnoticed. Join us in standing up for free speech and Palestinian human rights! I will be accompanying Yves to the police station at 980 rue Guy in Montreal this morning, where he is set to be detained for 24 hours before seeing a judge. I urge everyone who can to show up in solidarity.
