There’s a small child, clambering up the steps of St James’ Park for the very first time.

They don’t know about PSR, balance sheets or spending limits. They don’t understand that one day ambition might be restricted and hope tested by rules they’ve never heard of and probably will never properly understand.

They just see the black and white shirts, hear the roar of the Gallowgate and the smiles on everyone’s faces, and without being able to do a thing about it, they fall in love with Newcastle United.

Years later, they understand the frustrations. The players you cannot sign. The ones that have to be sold. Even the heartbreak of watching your heroes leave, the name you’d worn with pride on the back of your shirt. The player you told your mates was going to be something special, the one you were certain would be different, the one that made you believe anything was possible. The one that you were certain, would never leave.

Suddenly football has become as much about balancing books as building dreams.
It can feel like just when Newcastle finally dares to dream again, ambition is held back.
But every August, no matter what, we are back in our numbers.

The thing is, dreams are difficult things to kill on Tyneside.

Climbing those same steps. Wearing the famous black and white shirt. Carrying that same ridiculous, wonderful hope that this could be our year.

PSR can limit spending. It can take away our heroes. It can frustrate ambition and boy can it make the dream harder.

But it can’t regulate passion.

Because Newcastle United isn’t a decision you make, it’s a love you inherit, a feeling that finds you and never lets go..

It’s wor city, wor club and wor hope.

And once that black and white gets into your blood, it stays there forever.

@hardsy05 I agree unfortunately. WWC has proven their is room for all codes in this country. Nothing brings all men women children of all nations together like football can. When the ALF have politicians and awful media in their back pocket you're always going to get ignorance like this.

Thought the kid had glimpses of class but got a raw deal being thrown in the deep end with little support.

Seeing him at AC Milan later in his career makes you think he was mismanaged at the toon

@Haydenfreedom Yeah hard to argue, challenging as a fan because you don't get a say who buys your club. Thankfully my local club are NPL 2 so I coach and watch them. But it's hard for people who have been so passionately behind heart to just have no club come the weekend

@Haydenfreedom @MelbourneCity Yeah agree Alot of people around us including a friend of mine left during joyceball. We hung on in vain hoping they would learn and get it right. GF decision showed they don't want fan engagement and to build a club. Genuinely feel the players get it but the club doesn't care
