Ottoman Christians lived under the millet system as dhimmis with communal autonomy and jizya tax payments but also endured restrictions, the devshirme child levy, and escalating violence including massacres in the 19th-20th centuries.
Ottoman Millet system organized subjects primarily by religious affiliation rather than ethnicity or territory, granting recognized communities (Christian, Jew) significant autonomy over internal affairs while maintaining overall loyalty to the Sultan and Islamic supremacy. It provided some autonomy to these subjects; each millet's (religious group's) religious leader (patriarch, chief rabbi) acted as both spiritual head and intermediary with the Ottoman state. Their leaders handled personal status law (marriage, divorce, inheritance, family matters) based on their own religious codes (canon law for Christians, halakha for Jews). They had autonomy on matters like internal education, charities, hospitals, and social welfare (often funded by community donations or endowments like waqfs). They also handled collection and distribution of certain taxes within the community, dispute resolution for cases entirely within the millet (no Muslims involved).
Christians and Jews enjoyed freedom to practice their faith (with limits on public expression, like no new churches/synagogues without permission or bells in some periods).Property ownership and economic participation (Jews and Christians often excelled in trade, finance, medicine, and crafts. Sephardic Jews welcomed after 1492 boosted Ottoman commerce and textiles), also their own schools, welfare systems, and places of worship. By 19th century, Sublime Porte would borrow from Christian and Jews bankers who were Ottoman citizens as they were rich.
On the negative side, non-Muslims faced institutionalized inequalities like payment of jizya (head tax) in lieu of military service (exempting them from the army but marking subordination). Additional levies like higher customs duties or land taxes (kharaj) applied. Millets often collected these internally. They also had social and legal inferiority, like their testimony in mixed courts valued less. There were also prohibitions/limits on riding horses, carrying weapons, building tall houses of worship, public processions, or holding certain high offices.
From the 14th–17th centuries, Christian (mainly Balkan) boys were levied, converted to Islam, and trained as Janissaries (elite infantry) or administrators. This was a form of "blood tax" providing manpower but disrupting families. However, it was not applied to Jews or all Christians uniformly.
Overall, Ottoman treatment of Christians and Jews were better than European Christian treatment of Muslims or non-Christians. How did Christians treat Muslims in Christian Europe back then? And how were non-Christian populations on American continent treated by the Spanish and Portuguese?
@RozaMichal@derJamesJackson Yeah, the empire that welcomed Jews when Europeans expelled them from everywhere and gave them a home so that Israelis like you can now badmouth them.
I'm sold on Maza and City should sign both players. Question is, are Man City sold on Maza enough to quickly make a move on him and spend what's necessary since other big clubs also want him and Bayer don't want to sell the guy so they'll put a big price tag on him like they did with Wirtz.
Watch the full 3:45 minute short film I made entirely with Kling 3.0 on my Youtube channel and let me know what you think.. 👇

Buffy takes place in Sunnyville, they don't travel to LA, Arizona etc. Tom and Jerry takes place in a house and occasionally outside. I have a separate account and connect to that account with VPN but that account is connected to my original account, perhaps I should change that?. You can't have multiple channels on YT? I haven't started posting yet, I'm preparing it.
@stats99viz@AnimeVersus_X Yeah but what if my videos are episodic series of 3 characters' adventures in the same village and home, given that I create the original characters and write the script for each episode?
You said "the same style of editing for everything and it also looks poor quality. Also, super repetitive. Your animations and thumbnails all look the same."
Can you tell me why this would be grounds for demonetization if the content is authentic and is popular with enough audience?
@GultekinBerkant @cansimitus "Turkiye'ye donmez" kısmı tamamen prosedür icabi verilmiş bir gerekçe. Vermek istemiyoruz dememiş eldeki kalıp gerekcelerden en uygununu vermiş.
