Look up...way up at our Base Plant oil sands site north of Fort McMurray and you’ll see one of the world's largest construction cranes. At a height of 135 metres, the Mammoet PTC 210 DS ring crane easily towers over the massive operation.

The crane’s size is needed given the monumental task at hand: moving eight giant coke drums and two super modules into place in our Upgrader 1 (U1). The heaviest load will weigh 1,248 tonnes, plus another 350 tonnes for the rigging.

The multi-year Coke Drum Integrity Project (CDIP) will improve U1’s safety and reliability by replacing aging coke drums with new ones, alongside changing the decoking systems and installing a variety of personal and process safety upgrades. The major project will lengthen the life of U1 by another 30 years.

The CDIP project is a made-in-Alberta success story as all pieces contributing to this work were made and fabricated locally.
