Both sides are ignoring evidence to reach the conclusion they already want. Whether it’s the delusional woman insisting she did nothing wrong, or the people defending her by pretending she isn’t seriously mentally ill, both sides lose the plot.

The reasonable position is that this woman should be in a psychiatric ward, receiving treatment and being kept away from situations where she could hurt herself or anyone else. At the same time, nobody should be celebrating the murder of three children.

You think she’s crazy, but apparently not crazy enough to need serious psychiatric intervention. They think she was crazy, but apparently not crazy enough for that to affect how they judge what happened. You’re both being hypocritical in opposite directions—two sides of the same coin, both refusing to meet anywhere near the middle.
