@joshua_j28051 Robert may have taken it off of Rhaegar’s body at the trident. Joffrey likely stole it and gave it to the assassin to kill Bran.
The book confirmed that Joffrey ordered the assassination to impress Robert after he said it was no mercy to keep him alive in that state
@Daykerpriest They screwed up even calling him Aegon at all. There’s no way that Lyanna would’ve named him Aegon after his older half brother from Rhaegars previous marriage

He wanted to raise him into a good man and build good relations with the new heir to the Iron Islands.
Raising him like a brother to Robb he hoped he’d stop the raiding on the northern coast.
