Each time Iowa visits Columbus, it’s paramount that we not forget the time that Iowa, in the shadow of one of the darkest days in UI history, beat the Buckeyes in 1991.
On Friday, November 1 1991, a gunman walked into Van Allen Hall into a meeting of the physics department and killed four people with a pistol. He then walked down the street and killed another university employee before killing himself.
It was so senseless and awful. Five lives erased in a ten minute span, all because the gunman was aggrieved about academics.
The next day, Hayden Fry’s Iowa team removed the tigerhawk from the helmets and walked into the horseshoe and beat Ohio State. The win meant nothing and everything at the same time.
We must never forget the innocent people that died that Friday.
