Farmers oppose cashew export ban, demand special fund for local processing.
Cashew farmers in Nigeria have rejected moves to ban the export of raw cashew nuts, warning that such a policy could harm livelihoods and destabilise the sector, while calling on the federal government to instead provide targeted funding to support local processing.
The position was made known by the President of the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), Dr Ojo Joseph Ajanaku, while addressing journalists after a meeting of the association and its Board of Trustees.
Ajanaku said attempts to impose an export ban were being driven by vested interests and could reverse gains made in the industry over the years, particularly for smallholder farmers who form the backbone of cashew production in Nigeria.
