England brought Premier League stars to a World Cup. Ghana 🇬🇭 brought a goalkeeper from Accra. Ghana did not lose.
Benjamin Asare 🇬🇭🧤
He is 33 years old. He plays his club football at Accra Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League. He has never played in Europe. Not even once.
Yet he is the man standing between Ghana and the world right now.
It started in the qualifiers. While Ghana's foreign-based keepers took the headlines, Asare was quietly doing his job at home, featuring in 6 qualification matches, conceding just once, helping the Black Stars punch their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He arrived in North America as the backup. Lawrence Ati-Zigi was the number one. Asare was just supposed to be there, just in case.
Then God had other plans.
Against Panama in Ghana's opening group game, Ati-Zigi went down injured in the first half. Asare warmed up on the touchline. He came on at half-time with Ghana leading 1-0 and the pressure of a World Cup debut on his shoulders.
He kept the clean sheet. Ghana won.
Then came England. England's starting lineup was filled with players from the Premier League, La Liga, and the Bundesliga. Harry Kane. Jude Bellingham. Declan Rice. England had 78% possession and 19 shots.
Asare made 6 saves. England scored zero.
He became the first goalkeeper from the Ghana Premier League to start a FIFA World Cup match for the Black Stars. Not just to play. To start. Against England.
No team has avoided defeat while attempting so few shots in a World Cup game since at least 1966.
Ghana had 22% possession and 2 shots total. They did not lose.
Ghana have 4 points from 2 games and are on the brink of the Round of 16 for the first time since 2010. The man holding the wall is not from the Premier League. He is not from Ligue 1 or the Bundesliga.
He goes home to the Ghana Premier League after this.
Benjamin Asare is proof that greatness does not require a European postcode.
The goalkeeper you see prostrating in front of you is genuinely living the best days of his life.
This is Benjamin Asare, Ghanas 33-year-old goalkeeper, who made three saves today and kept a clean sheet against England before celebrating after the game with this prostration.
What makes his story special is that almost nobody knew who he was. For most of his career, he played in Ghana’s second division. On top of that, his financial situation was so difficult that he had to work on cocoa farms for three straight years just to support his family and keep his football dream alive.
The remarkable part is that Asare kept pushing until he earned a move to Ghanaian top-flight side Accra Hearts of Oak in 2025. He then received his first-ever call-up to the Ghana national team during the World Cup qualifiers, where he played six games and conceded just one goal.
Asare went on to become the first Ghanaian player in history to represent his country at a World Cup while playing in the domestic league. He also made six saves across games against Panama and England and didn’t concede a single goal.
Glory to those who never stop working for their dreams. To every Ghanaian reading this: congratulations. You should be proud. Stories like Benjamin Asare’s are what make football beautiful, and seeing one of your own rise from cocoa farms to the World Cup stage is something worth celebrating. 🇬🇭❤️
Crazy night 😅. Woke up to two kinds of messages … congratulations from people who saw me holding @AraTheJay’s award on stage and thought I won 😂 … and consolation messages from people who were genuinely rooting for us.
Either way, I appreciate all of it. Thank you for caring about the art this deeply. Thank you for riding for the music, the stories, the growth, and the journey. Saa support wei ɛnyɛ normal, and I never take it for granted.
And to everybody disappointed on my behalf, keep your head up. Perspective matters. FMB had zero nominations. KANI got four. That alone is proof of growth. Proof that the work is connecting further and reaching deeper. We can only build from here.
Awards are beautiful, but they’re not bigger than purpose. The mission has always been to make honest music that lives with people long after release dates and award nights pass. That part, we’ve already won.
Now go play Fruit of the Womb, call your mother, and tell her you love her.
We keep going.
Ps: Congratulations to all the winners especially @arathejay 🫶🏾
🚨✊🏿 Vinicius: “I hope Lamine can continue this fight against racism as well. We have money, but poor black people have more difficulties than we do”.
“I’m not saying that Spain, Germany, or Portugal are racist countries, but there are racists in every country, and if we fight together, hopefully other players and people will stop suffering these things”.
Dear Malik,
Thank you for your response. That’s a strong and true sign of leadership.
I look forward to your return to X soon and the update on the 2,000 permanent jobs and more, for our young unemployed youth.
Cheers.
Nkrumah was such an evil dictator because he wanted a one party state whose state ideology was to industrialize Ghana instead of the current multi-party system where you guys manufacture nothing, import almost everything, and only export raw cocoa & immigrants to the west.🤡
