While we often only get to see medieval queer people through the eyes of those who condemned them, this manuscript may offer a glimpse of how they talked to each other, and in what terms.
What do monsters, queer people and transmasc Jesus have in common? They all show up in a 9th-c. manuscript from St Gall! If you're interested in more details, take a look at my new (oa!) article in Early Medieval Europe (short 🧵below)

In this manuscript, the scribe changed the text so the queer monster spoke in the first person. Later, someone added a doodle of an ambiguously gendered Jesus. So, at least one monk identified with the queer monster, and another thought being 'of both sexes' could be Christ-like.
Two new open-access articles have just been published in Early Medieval Europe. Both focus on ninth-century MSS.: Michael Eber @bildungsburger investigates queerness in a fascinating copy of the Liber monstrorum from St Gall: https://t.co/pHyeI5Htob
If you are looking for a last-minute stocking stuffer: My book, “Christologie und Kanonistik. Der Dreikapitelstreit in merowingischen libri canonum”, is out now: https://t.co/2S1q94ZGW0 Many thanks to @mgh_tweets for including it in the series “MGH Schriften” /1

In these seemingly random assortments of texts, Gallic canonists tried their best to transmit both the “standards” of canon law and texts addressing the latest controversies, and to group texts together both by genre and topic. These goals were just not always compatible… /5
The good news: I just sent in the final proofs and indices for my book.
The bad news: The Johns have started to multiply and may soon break containment.
Can't wait for this to fly off the shelves for all the enthusiasts of 'Strategic Litigation and Corporate Complicity in Crimes under International Law: A TWAIL Analysis'. 😅
