On this day in 1945, Subhas Chandra Bose arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, where this picture was taken. The next day (18 August) he was reported to have died following a plane crash in Taiwan. The controversy which began decades before all of us born has still not died out. There have been three open inquiries into this controversy. The first two, led by Congress MP Shah Nawaz Khan and Pt Nehru's friend GD Khosla, upheld the Taiwan death story. The third, led by impartial former Supreme Court judge Manoj Mukherjee, rejected this theory. However, the Mukherjee report was rejected by Congress government for political reasons.

As I write this, there is a possibility that the controversy might come alive in the next few months. Netaji's daughter has filed a PIL in the Supreme Court. She wants her father's remains (bones and ashes) brought to India from Japan. Let us see what the Modi government does next. They have a tough choice to make. If they bring the remains to India, there would be a big controversy. And if they don't, it should be clear to all that, never mind what they say for public consumption, the Government doesn't believe the plane crash story.

As far as @chandrachurg and I are concerned, the news of plane crash was planted to give a cover to Bose's escape towards Soviet Russia. The ashes are of a Japanese solider.
