Ofsted’s new inspection framework is unfairly penalising inclusive schools at a time when the government is seeking to promote inclusion, warns @NAHTnews
https://t.co/KvUdrsbLUj
Ofsted in 2024: ‘We apologise sincely. We’ll work with you and be sensitive to signs of stress in leaders’.
Ofsted in 2026. ‘Oh, the disadvantaged schools and their low outcomes? That must be the leaders and their low expectations’.
Didn’t take long for the mask to slip then?
Imagine saying to a room full of school leaders that if you think the new inspection framework is penalising schools with higher levels of poverty and SEND that they have low expectations, but that’s what Ofsted did last week!
So easy for OFSTED to talk about "not succumbing to low expectations for disadvantaged young ppl" when none of them are the ones doing the classroom teaching in disadvantaged areas and having ppl pop in, judge, then leave.
@Ofstednews@martyneoliver Showing how out of touch you are. Led by the architect of off rolling & flattening the grass you have NO idea about the reality of those of us working in areas of disadvantage & embracing inclusivity. We fight every day to help children learn & develop from their starting points.
School leaders are facing relentless pressure right now.
Attendance challenges. A growing SEND crisis. Safeguarding cases that are more complex than ever. Funding that never quite meets the need. Staff recruitment and retention becoming harder each year.
Schools are increasingly being asked to hold together the social fabric of their communities.
And rightly, we are accountable. We should be.
But there is a question the system needs to start asking.
Schools have a duty of care to staff. Employers have a duty of care to employees.
So what duty of care exists for school leaders operating within a high-stakes accountability system?
The debate following the tragic death of Ruth Perry forced the profession to confront something uncomfortable - the pressure attached to inspection outcomes can be immense.
This isn’t about avoiding accountability or lowering standards.
It’s about recognising that school leaders are human.
Right now, many heads are carrying extraordinary responsibility for issues that stretch far beyond the school gates, while still being judged through a system overseen by Ofsted that can have life-changing consequences.
A strong school system needs accountability.
But it also needs leaders who feel supported, trusted and able to sustain the role.
Because if we continue to ignore the human cost of the job, we risk losing the very people the system depends on.
And I suspect many school leaders would quietly say the same thing:
Enough is enough.
This is an utter disgrace…creating a system biased against schools facing the toughest challenges is not challenging the “Quiet curse of low expectations”
Some rest on their laurels and still get good results… others move heaven and earth to help their pupils and still don’t
I guarantee that outcomes are not low in disadvantaged schools due to leaders/teachers having ‘low expectations’.
Every day we face up and overcome considerable challenges in the name of improving life chances for children we care deeply about.
So, respectfully, pipe down.
Who at @Ofstednews allowed Oliver to get away with grading schools’ achievement, according to their attainment position in league tables?Because that’s exactly what’s happening in inspections.
Did no-one have the guts to stand up and say ‘This isn’t right!’. You, @dan_ofsted?
If these early signs become a trend then I am afraid the new Ofsted framework and how it is being implemented won’t be fair for schools with below average prior attainment (is half of schools). Worrying.
@NEUnion Barely 4% of GDP. @bphillipsonMP doesn’t seem to value education, she’s sticking at Thatcher’s worst & the evidence is in the decline in mental health amongst children & teachers alike. @hmtreasury must move towards 6% of GDP, ASAP.
🚨 #BREAKINGNEWS Multple Democrats and Republicans are now calling for the removal of Steve Witkoff after leaked transcripts show he was potentially working on behalf of Russia to manipulate Trump into a peace deal that favored Russia without negotiating with Ukriane. 🚨
UPDATE: OBR has corrected its earlier estimate of a possible 1.7 per cent cut to per pupil funding and revised it to a 4.9 per cent possible cut, but DfE says OBR is "incorrect"
@NeilDotObrien@kitmalthouse This will push more primary schools into real critical budget deficit, impacting on staffing, ability to manage high levels of SEND pupils & the inevitable impact of the new Ofsted framework, Curriculum review, Changes to writing &EYFS- all of which have financial consequences.
