@SemCasaca@dinowilliam@hoje_no@visegrad24 The usual setup, before the advent of today's automatic transmissions was as follows: three or four gears in low range, three or four gears in high range. Plus an optional split gear on the highest( like overdrive).

It is still mandatory to use manual gearbox when getting the licence for a truck.
By the way, Swedish trucks don't have 18 speed gearbox as in the US.
@CcibChris I'm inclined to agree with you, even though my Swedish heritage tries to force me to hold the SAAB 32 just a tiny notch above.
But the Swedish air force operated both.
