🔴 Liverpool’s Defensive Weaknesses? The Mainstream Media ……..

Plenty of pundits (Hasselbaink, Osman, TalkSport, etc.) have pushed the idea that LFC are “there to be got at”, too attacking with Wirtz, losing structure…..

Having rewatched Atleti + earlier games, & analysed the numbers ⬇️ @Statsbomb I think this is a big overreaction!!

🔴 Eye Test & Tactical Notes

   •   Early worries pre-season valid - Bournemouth watching it back were mainly individual errors, not system flaws. Slot won’t have lost sleep.

   •   Mac Allister: LFC haven’t had him at peak or available. Replacements at L8 are naturally AMs → don’t drop between CB/LB as instinctively make same instinctive decisions - understandably!

   •   Gakpo: tough 1st half v Atleti, often overloaded on his side. I watched it back & if you view all Atletico attacks the most common issue came from his defending/decisions more than structure. Szobo too presses forward instinctively, not always dropping.

   •   Left Back: For years teams attacked Trent’s side. This season it’s LB targeted:

      •   Arsenal → Kerkez 1v1 long balls
      •   Bournemouth → Semenyo switched to right to target Kerkez
      •   Atleti → overloads 2v1/3v2 vs Robbo

Kerkez/Robbo will improve with rhythm & time on pitch but opponents are clearly focusing there.

🔴 Summary
Performance, result & scoreline.

People see 2-0 → 2-2 and scream collapse. Criminal to give that lead away.
Lazy cliché driven “too open”, “there to be got at”

Reality = on the night was Liverpool defended well for large parts, structurally pretty good with room for improvement, conceded very few chances and no high quality chances

On the negative:

1) Individual errors especially left side
2) Mid block maybe more intensity on first oppo touch

Reality past 3 games

   •   3 wins in 3
   •   Performances improving each game
   •   Atleti possibly best display of season (that 30–45 spell was exciting & hopefully a sign of what’s to come!)

Narrative of “weak defensively” doesn’t match eye or data.

If individuals sharpen concentration/decisions, late winners won’t even be needed because they will be home and hosed early doors

Liverpool are improving.

Liverpool are not there to be got at.
