Did Muslims participate in the sub Saharan slave trade? And Did you know that in Islam, freeing a slave is considered an act of worship?
When comparing Muslim and Christian histories of slavery, we should distinguish between the actions of people and the teachings of their religion. Muslims participated in the trans-Saharan slave trade, but slavery was never sanctioned as a religious command to enslave people. Islam instead encouraged and rewarded the freeing of slaves.
The Atlantic slave trade, on the other hand, was defended and justified by the head of Christianity, Christian authorities and institutions.
History should be discussed honestly—and religious teachings should be distinguished from the actions of those who claim to follow them.
