🧬 Our nervous system doesn’t just “feel” stress—it can quietly reshape how tissues defend themselves. In a new @CellCellPress study, Westlake University teams (@bingzhang_lab Lab × Ting Zhou Lab) uncover a neuro-epithelial “translation” circuit.
🔬 Key finding: In an early melanoma mouse model, stress-like sympathetic activation reduced TRM and weakened immune surveillance, while blocking sympathetic signaling helped preserve this frontline defense. This cross-disciplinary work links body-wide stress responses to tissue-level immunity, with implications for cancer immunosurveillance and TRM-driven skin disease.

This provides a mechanistic link between stress physiology and tissue immunosurveillance. Congratulations to our co–first authors, Peng Zhang and Juju Miao, and to the entire Zhang & Zhou lab teams at Westlake. Full text link: https://t.co/7K8x5j8oKI
Delighted to share our recent Cell paper. We identify a neuro–epithelial circuit that serves as a tunable input to barrier immunity: peripheral sympathetic signaling via NE→epithelial ADRB2 (rather than directly to T cells) controls recruitment and establishment of CD8⁺ TRM.
Excited to share our latest article on the impact of intermittent fasting on hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) and hair follicle regeneration. We found that activated HFSCs undergo apoptosis upon fasting, caused by elevated cellular ROS upon metabolic switching to utilizing fat.
Intermittent fasting has proven benefits for metabolic health, but study shows that it also slows hair growth in mice.

Congrats to outstanding postdoc Ying Lyu and our amazing team YounJoo, Ericka, Richa, @MDA_UTHGrad#proudPI! A big shout out to our incredible collaborators @kchenken , Yue Lu, Taiping Chen, and others @MDAndersonNews .
In our murine model, we saw viral like particles originated from the endogenous retroviruses, accompanied by hair loss and stem cell exhaustion, which can be rescued by antiviral drugs. Very excited about the implications behind these findings, especially how innate antiviral pathways can be leveraged to expose cancer vulnerability #EndCancer. Look forward to the next discoveries!
