🚨 Dangote Refinery’s Shameless Attack on Nigerian Workers 🚨
On 25th Sept 2025, over 1,000 workers were unjustly sacked, branded as “saboteurs” for simply joining PENGASSAN. This is not reorganisation. This is corporate dictatorship.
Policy References and Appeal for Intervention.
1.Right to Unionize (Labour Act, Cap L1, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004): Section 9 of the Act explicitly provides that employees have the right to join or form trade unions of their choice without interference. Does the claim that Free Trade Zone status stands within the Nigerian law?
2.Local Content Mandates (NOGICD Act, 2010): Sections 3 and 28 mandate first consideration for Nigerian workers and equal conditions of service where expatriates are employed alongside locals. Paying Nigerians twenty times less than expatriates violates both the spirit and letter of the Act.
Furthermore, the NCDMB expatriate quota regime requires succession planning and skills transfer, not wholesale replacement of Nigerians with foreigners.
3.Occupational Safety and Welfare (Factories Act, Cap F1, LFN 2004 & Labour Act): Employers are legally required to provide safe working conditions, adequate PPE, and hazard allowances. Dangote Refinery’s failure to consistently provide PPEs and its exposure of workers to unsafe conditions without protection constitutes a breach of statutory obligations.
Our Appeal:
We therefore call on the NCDMB, the Ministry of Labour, and the Federal Government to urgently intervene. This is not just a labour issue, it is a test case for Nigeria’s commitment to local content, fair labour practices, and the principle that industrialisation should not come at the cost of worker exploitation. The refinery cannot be allowed to function as an enclave economy, where Nigerian workers are treated as dispensable and silenced when they demand fairness.
The government must insist on transparency regarding the alleged sabotage, investigate welfare violations, enforce fair pay and hazard protection, and ensure that Nigerians are not discriminated against in favour of expatriates. The new directive itself is proof that the refinery cannot operate without Nigerians and that a balanced workforce is not only desirable but necessary. Only then will the refinery truly stand as a beacon of progress, not just for its size, but for its fairness, inclusivity, and sustainability.
Thank you.
