Would be great to audit the use of the ‘lookout bedside vision check tool’ as we know that good vision is important for the prevention of falls in older adults #visionandfalls @FollowBIOS

[Falls & Fragility Fracture Audit Programme @RCP_FFFAP]

📣Thanks to all the falls teams that help make #NAIF great!

'The National Audit of Inpatient Falls (NAIF) is in its second year as a continuous audit. One of our strengths is the excellent engagement from the falls teams that collect & input audit data.'

Absolutely @MPOrthoptics #depthperception and #contrastsensitivity are just as important if not more! A standardised approach to #vision assessment to include these would be ideal to prevent #falls

[Marianne Piano @MPOrthoptics]

And depth perception too!

[BIOS Falls SIG @BIOSFallsSIG]

Don’t forget the importance of assessing #vision in older adults at risk of #falls. WATCH 👀 that step! @FollowBIOS @preventfallsHI @RCP_FFFAP @GeriSoc @AHPs4PH @PHE_uk #fallsawarenessweek2020

[BIOS Falls SIG @BIOSFallsSIG]

Reductions in elective cataract surgery, lack of access to optometrists may leave many older people at risk of sight impairment. Another risk factor for falls, hence vision assessment is important for falls prevention. @FollowBIOS #visionandfalls #fallsprevention

[British Geriatrics Society @GeriSoc]

As well as planning for falls services, local areas should consider how they can maintain/increase physical activity among all older people to ensure they are able to maintain and develop their muscle strength and balance and reduce their risk of falls https://t.co/O2yxN5H5VY

[Dr Phil Hammond 💙 @drphilhammond]

There’s been a significant reduction in the number of patients presenting with acute retinal detachment each day since the lockdown. People may be permanently & avoidably losing vision. If you get a dark shadow in your vision plus or minus floaters, please seek urgent help Pls RT

[BIOS Falls SIG @BIOSFallsSIG]

Many older adults may be waiting for eye healthcare treatment during this COVID-19 crisis. Remember to take your time, don’t rush but keep moving on a level surface with no trip hazards to #preventfalls #takeyourtime

[Alice Kilby @AliceKilbyPT]

When advising older people to stay home please also advise them to keep moving and keep doing activities to maintain strength and balance - it’s vital that we help to maintain function of this vulnerable group in socialisolation #SI #covid19 #movemore #PhysicalActivity

Trips over steps a common cause of falls! Unequal vision leads to impaired depth perception, another reason why it is important to check vision as part of the falls prevention assessment. #watchthatstep #fallsawareness

[BIOS Falls SIG @BIOSFallsSIG]

If a patient has an age-related sight condition, wouldn’t it be great for us eye health care professionals to explain how it may affect their functional vision to help them manage their falls risk? #FallsPreventionWeek #EyeWeek #visionandfalls

[BIOS Falls SIG @BIOSFallsSIG]

How many #falls are caused by missed steps or ‘misjudging the raised flags’ ? How about checking #vision and #depthperception for preventing a further fall?? #FallsAwarenessWeek #visionandfalls

[BIOS Falls SIG @BIOSFallsSIG]

A quick and simple check of their glasses, vision and provision of appropriate aids can help prevent falls in people with learning disabilities: making reasonable adjustments - https://t.co/wX1MbYJbQf #fallsawareness #visionandfalls ⁦@FollowBIOS⁩ https://t.co/qS9ZYCGoGU

We need good Vision for postural stability so Visual function assessment should be an important part of every multi factorial falls assessment ! #fallsprevention #NICEfallsguidance #visionandfalls

Don’t forget about vision in our older adults to reduce the risk of falls. Orthoptists remember to ask at risk patietnts if they’ve had a recent fall #fallsawareness @FollowBIOS #visionandfalls
