Making a second brief return to twitter to report that @TBQuarterly sent me a (very nice!) rejection letter for a poem I wrote about tacos, which I am using as permission to just throw the thing on Medium along with several paragraphs of commentary https://t.co/MKq9mJIubQ
@BUSSCRO is the number of truffles found inclusive of the ones eaten during the competition? what’s the margin of victory “on the books”: 12-8? 11-5? or do you get partial credit for truffles found but then observed having eaten? apologies if this is covered elsewhere
Please enjoy FUCKED UP LITTLE MAN, a Dark Souls fan RPG where you play the weird NPCs who go "heh heh heh heh" at the end of every exchange. PDF and text-only version: https://t.co/bjb5SqvMDc
@jkohlmann trying to find that essay that made the comparison of the form "just like we look back at the 1910s with their radium patent medicines and think they were nuts for not regulating that poison, in the future they will similarly think we were nuts to use the internet like we do"
@paynushaver the grocery store had already started emptying candy from the “seasonal” aisle and putting full price christmas stuff in it on the 30th. we live in a world where even the smallest wins are taken from us
had a dream that i submitted something so bad that they gave me a video of looping stock footage of sharks with the words “CAN’T WRITE” prominently displayed that i was (legally?) obligated to prepend to all future writing

@JessicaHullman@sharoz I am half-tempted to make a “here’s what Steve is talking about with within-subject stats in VIS papers” RMD page somewhere because I think it’s an important issue (and base R doesn’t make it as trivial to do as you’d hope) that both I and others have screwed up periodically
if and when this website dies i will just retreat down a strata or two to earlier websites. see you all on the something awful forums to discuss the plot progress of keenspot webcomics and uk twee/anorak. failing that, my aim screenname is also available on request
@AsMirry It is still wild to me that we’ve made a system where so much of our self-worth and professional prospects depend on whether we can get a small set of grumpy strangers to agree that we did a good enough job writing things down
Why do conferences/journals sometimes ask reviewers for a novelty/originality score? The only thing it does is create bad incentive structures. Reject work if it’s plagiarized, sure, but why on earth should a reviewer care about “originality” beyond that?
@AsMirry I was considering just copy pasting something snippy in every review but that might not be the most worthwhile or helpful strategy. I went with “tweeting into the void” as a way to express displeasure without adding even more annoyances to everybody’s plate.
Phenomenal. Bar-tailed Godwit has broken its own record: a first-year bird (five months old!) has flown 13,560 km—just shy of the direct flight limit of a Boeing 787—from Alaska to Tasmania, seemingly non-stop, in just 11 days (avg. speed: c.51 km/hr).
