Kereru pigeon voted #BirdOfTheYear in NZ. Totally my type of bird.has a reputation as the drunkest bird in NZ,falling from trees after consuming rotting fruit left on the ground."clumsy, drunk, gluttonous and glamorous" lacking self discipline when flying. Colourful. Fabulous
Ok so I just learned that in New Zealand the Kereru has been chosen as #BirdOfTheYear! This massive, tank top wearing, fat pigeon actually gets DRUNK by eating fermented fruit! NZ, I’d LOVE to visit you someday, until then, here’s a pic of that absolute unit 🇵🇷❤️🇳🇿 @Forest_and_Bird

The #Kererū (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) was crowned #birdoftheyear in New Zealand. Aside from getting drunk off fermented seeds and falling out of trees, it's also one of the largest pigeon species in the world. This is specimen DMNH 9850 #fromthecollection
Update: the New Zealand #BirdOfTheYear award has been given to a fat pigeon that spends its days drunk from berries fermenting in its stomach. Round of applause of the kererū please and thank you.
We hear the party went on well into the night until tūī got grumpy and started squawking for the kererū to "shut up and go to bed already". #BirdOfTheYear
#BirdOfTheYear may be over, but you can still help our native birds with a donation to @Forest_and_Bird. They protect and restore our wildlife and wild places through predator control, plantings, ecosystem restoration and advocacy. https://t.co/ZjGqlglMko
