@birdsproject@UDC_gal@CICAUDC@udeconcepcion It was a real pleasure to host Andrés from @UDC_gal@CICAUDC for his secondment. It was a really productive month with the karyotype identified for a sea urchin. This achievement will improve significantly the description of the genome of the first sea urchin inhabiting Chile 👍
The researchers are currently working on adapting and evaluating the method for SARS-CoV-2 samples. When studying a viral sample, it is important to capture all the viral strains, because different strains may have a different response to the available treatments and drugs.
Researchers from @UDC_gal and @helsinkiuni developed a new method that characterize viral quasispecies in samples from high-throughput sequencing data, as part of the MSCA RISE BIRDS project. It may be of interest to better understand SARS-CoV-2 #COVID19@REA_research @MSCActions
Andrés Martínez-Lage (ER, @UDC_gal@CICAUDC) has initiated collaborations with researchers at @udeconcepcion for the sequencing and assembly of one of the sea urchin species from the Chilean coasts, as part of his secondment
Dustin Cobas (ESR, @dccuchile) is giving a talk about "Terms frequency by documents on repetitive string collections" to local researchers, during his secondment at @UDC_gal@lbdudc
Alejandro Pacheco (ESR, @dccuchile) is giving a talk on "Indexing Highly Repetitive Collections via Grammar Compression" to local researchers of @lbdudc, as part of his secondment at @UDC_gal
Entrevistamos a nuestros investigadores Adrián Gómez Brandón y Tirso V. Rodeiro con motivo de su estancia de investigación en la @KyushuUniv_EN.

Juha Kärkkäinen (ER, @helsinkiuni), Adrián Gómez-Brandón (ESR, @UDC_gal) and Tirso V. Rodeiro (ESR, @UDC_gal), working with Dominik Köppl and Hideo Bannai, as part of their secondments at @KyushuUniv_EN
Miguel R. Penabad (ER, UDC) was seconded to UDEC from mid-October to mid-November. It was not the best moment to do research in Chile, as everyone was (and are) fighting for a better future; however, they could make time for improving ongoing works and starting new ones
Last week, BIRDS supported the event JCC2019, the Chilean Congress of Computing 2019, organized by @udeconcepcion . Despite facing a complicated situation, researchers at Chile could enjoy a nice environment for knowledge transferring and networking. https://t.co/vTN24aHpYN
We send all our support to our colleagues from Chile, especially those at @uchile and @udeconcepcion, and to BIRDS researchers that are now seconded at those institutions (1 ER and 2 ESRs from @InescID and 1 ER from @UDC_gal at Santiago, and 1 ER from @UDC_gal at Concepción).
Gonzalo Navarro, BIRDS coordinator at @dccuchile, gave one of the keynote talks at SPIRE 2019 entitled "Repetitiveness and Indexability". He caught the attention of all attendees!
BIRDS has awarded travelling grants to 9 students to present their work (six of them are women! we have a record on women presenting their research at WCTA!)
WCTA 2019 (the 14th Workshop on Compression, Text and Algorithms) is being held at Segovia today, just the day after SPIRE 2019. Nadia Pisanti gave the keynote talk on "On-line (approximate) Pattern Matching on Degenerate Texts and Applications".
SPIRE 2019 (the 26th International Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval, https://t.co/TJI91gDo5x) is being held in Segovia these days, partially supported by BIRDS project. Great environment for advancing on data structures and algorithms analysis and design!
BIRDS Y4 annual meeting was held yesterday at Segovia, in coincidence with SPIRE conference. The Management Committee reviewed the status of the project, and discussed plans for future collaboration.
Alexandre Francisco (ER, @InescID) completed his secondment at Enxenio, where he reviewed the integration of the project results with BIRDS members at the company.
Dustin Cobas (ESR, UCHILE) is also explaining to the audience his PhD thesis topic, obtaining feedback and lines of collaborations from local researchers, as part of his secondment at @UDC_gal
