"Chairman, a country without reserves is not sovereign. The potential of this Bill to destabilize Uganda’s balance of payments is our primary concern as a central bank. For example, last financial year the overall balance of payment surplus was USD 1.5 billion. That’s how we were able to increase our reserve coverage by USD 1.5 billion. Today as we speak our reserves are close to USD 6 billion. Why? Because these inflows have been coming in. The moment you tamper with these inflows here, we risk running down our reserves, and that is economic disaster for a country.” Governor Atingi-Ego on the Protection of Sovereignty Bill 2026 in an appearance before Parliament today.
Very indisciplined young soldiers have been camped up at CCE hall in Makerere University for over two weeks now. They restrain the movement of students (teachers) and staff there, including slapping them. They urinate wherever and move about half dressed. Yesterday they beat up a young female lecturer and destroyed her phone as they threatened to hold her and ‘teach her a lesson at night’. They openly said that they are under instructions to shoot to kill. It’s university security that intervened to rescue her from their brutal hands. Could someone ensure the safety of staff and students from these violent militia-like invaders. A university space cannot be turned to this kind of barbarism.
Canada supports the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity universally, including as they apply to Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark. As we have consistently stated, the future of Greenland is for Greenland and Denmark alone to determine.
The security of the Arctic — NATO’s northern and western flanks — is essential to our Alliance. Canada strongly believes that the best way to secure the Arctic is by working together within NATO. Canada is concerned by the recent escalation.
Canada is significantly increasing Arctic security — strengthening our military and investing in critical infrastructure. We will continue to collaborate with our Allies to protect this critical region because we are all stronger when we work together.
We’re recalibrating Canada’s relationship with China — strategically, pragmatically, and decisively — to the benefit of the people of both our nations.
My joint statement with @Keir_Starmer and @EmmanuelMacron on the situation in Gaza and the West Bank:
“We strongly oppose the expansion of Israel’s military operations in Gaza. The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable. Yesterday’s announcement that Israel will allow a basic quantity of food into Gaza is wholly inadequate. We call on the Israeli Government to stop its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. This must include engaging with the UN to ensure a return to delivery of aid in line with humanitarian principles. We call on Hamas to release immediately the remaining hostages they have so cruelly held since 7 October 2023.
The Israeli Government’s denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable and risks breaching International Humanitarian Law. We condemn the abhorrent language used recently by members of the Israeli Government, threatening that, in their despair at the destruction of Gaza, civilians will start to relocate. Permanent forced displacement is a breach of international humanitarian law.
Israel suffered a heinous attack on October 7. We have always supported Israel’s right to defend Israelis against terrorism. But this escalation is wholly disproportionate.
We will not stand by while the Netanyahu Government pursues these egregious actions. If Israel does not cease the renewed military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid, we will take further concrete actions in response.
We oppose any attempt to expand settlements in the West Bank. Israel must halt settlements which are illegal and undermine the viability of a Palestinian state and the security of both Israelis and Palestinians. We will not hesitate to take further action, including targeted sanctions.
We strongly support the efforts led by the United States, Qatar and Egypt to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. It is a ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages and a long-term political solution that offer the best hope of ending the agony of the hostages and their families, alleviating the suffering of civilians in Gaza, ending Hamas’ control of Gaza and achieving a pathway to a two-state solution, consistent with the goals of the 18 June conference in New York co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. These negotiations need to succeed, and we must all work towards the implementation of a two-state solution, which is the only way to bring long-lasting peace and security that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve and ensure long-term stability in the region.
We will continue to work with the Palestinian Authority, regional partners, Israel and the United States to finalize consensus on arrangements for Gaza’s future, building on the Arab plan. We affirm the important role of the High-level Two-State Solution Conference at the UN in June in building international consensus around this aim. And we are committed to recognizing a Palestinian state as a contribution to achieving a two-state solution and are prepared to work with others to this end.”
The anger against Banyankore is unfortunate and should be redirected, but it needs to be understood. Without understanding it, it can’t be addressed. There is certainly national imbalance in distribution of opportunities in favour of Banyankore, and this can not only be seen but has also been statistically showed by government reports themselves (Eg EOC 2024). It has bred negative sentiments from others - which are not helped by arrogant responses.
This doesn’t mean that all Banyankore are benefiting, NOT AT ALL. There are very many desperate Banyankore without jobs, and many places in Ankore experiencing abject poverty and neglect. However, evidence of these is not logical proof for absence of ethnic favoratism in favour of group members. It is only proof that many haven’t benefitted, yet. Even when whites were dominating blacks under Apartheid in South Africa, there were many poor whites, and there were some rich blacks. But the existence of poor whites was not proof for Apartheid not being racially discriminative - the same can be said of racial discrimination in USA, and discrimination against women. Showing poor men doesn’t take away the fact that women are not generally systemically disadvantaged. Therefore, the common response by parading poverty in Ankore misses the point, is deflective, and comes across as defensive of the dangerous direction.
It should however be understood why such a response often comes out. First, many self-built, meriting, hard working Banyankore feel accused of something they haven’t benefitted from. Second, many struggling Banyankore obviously don’t see themselves in the picture of being favoured and feel (get) victimised for no reason. Third, the culprits (nepotistic and tribal beneficiaries) psychologically manipulate and mobilise other Banyankore to feel collectively targeted and fight back as a group - creating collective victimhood and fear. They make it appear as if they are being targeted simply for being Banyankore, and successfully keep the terrified Banyankore away from the fact that it is the benefitting tribalists/nepotists causing the anger from others.
You will therefore note a resultant trend where ethnic voting patterns change, and inwardly solidify. You will also observe a conspicuous trend in the names of those that defend or whitewash impunity online.
MK has been throwing around dangerous tribalistic lines and slurs for a while now. He is currently a big factor in endangering innocent Banyankore with his reckless unrestrained violent bigotry. How does a CDF kidnap a person (of another ethnic group) and then boast about teaching him Runyankore while torturing him! What sentiments do you think this naturally attracts? Moreover, where his chauvinistic tribalistic statements are not isolated occurrences but a clear pattern! It is not only a duty of Banyankore to condemn this dangerous fascist nonsense, but Banyankore need to note what it is causing towards them and condemn it more strongly. When such careless and arrogant behaviour (plus the inequalities) leads to ethnic violence, the primary causers are often insulated. It is the poor everyday Banyankore that they cause double victimhood. Big beneficiaries will either run to safety or use their security to protect themselves trouble.
Stop blocking discussions against tribal issues (pains), or else, we are building up for something worse. Raising the matter isn’t hatred for Banyankore. Stop guilt-tripping & threatening those who raise it; silence should actually scare us. When people are quiet, you can’t know what they feel or are capable of doing. Among other measures, especially in addressing inequalities, MK must be stopped. He is fanning what he won’t be capable of stopping. It is unfortunate that his parents, who seem to be the only ones that can officially reign him in, are apparently doing nothing about it. We shouldn’t keep quiet until this explodes, none of us can expect to be safe - on all sides.
To the CIC Gen YK Museveni. May I implore you to be guided by your own teachings over time about the recklessness of the past armies ( UA, UNLA) , the consequences of their actions & impunity. You are the CIC. The buck stops at your doorstep. Act. It is never too late.
President Trump’s latest tariffs are an attack on Canadian workers, families, and businesses. My government will ensure our response has maximum impact in the US and minimal impact here in Canada, while supporting the workers impacted.
My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect and make credible, reliable commitments to free and fair trade.
The moment U.S. tariffs came into effect this morning, so did the Canadian response.
Canada will be implementing 25% tariffs against $155 billion of American products.
Starting with $30 billion worth of goods immediately, and the remaining $125 billion in 21 days’ time.
Trump and Vance have declared themselves to be on Russia's side in the Russo-Ukraine war. This is a catastrophic mistake for America's national security. And let's be clear: Trump and Vance now personally own that policy. It is not the view of a majority of Americans of either or no political party.
If indeed someone has committed an offence and you are sure they have, why not use the legal arrest, detention and prosecution procedures! Why ambush and disappear them!
Kidnap already suggests criminal motives. The other reason this ‘kidnap’ approach should concern us is that any thug can use it when the public thinks it’s the usual giver suspects.

Colleagues in Kenya will be presenting a petition demanding the release of Dr. Kizza Besigye and all political prisoners in Uganda.
The petition will be delivered at 10:00 AM, marching from Aga Khan Walk to the National Assembly.
Later followed up with a march at 2:00 PM from Riverside Square to the Uganda High Commission.
Thanks @VOCALAfrica_ and all other actors for front lining the much needed spirit of solidarity.
Sisi wa Uganda, lets not relent our pursuit as well. Let's keep pushing.
