These are not the same as the American bison you could see in Yellowstone National Park; but are about 500 pounds heavier and darker in colour.
They still live in herds of thousands in Northern Canada.
Yesterday, our very own Dr. Jamie Brennan (right), put 8 #experimental GPS collars on #Bison to track 3 minute interval movement behavior over the next 4 months on the NE and SD border. With positive results, the project will expand to include 30 more. #lter. With @BisonJeff.

Custer State Park’s bison calves typically nurse for 5 months before they are weaned by their mothers, but they also start to include grasses into their diet beginning at 3 months of age.
