I walked into the National Defence Academy yesterday — not for the first time. But this time was different.

I’d been here as a child, when my father served. This time, I stood on stage in Habibullah Hall, speaking to 2,200 cadets.

Yesterday, I had the honour of delivering a guest lecture at the National Defence Academy, Pune — on a theme close to my heart: “Men of Fortitude in the Indian Air Force.”

Coming back — this time to speak to 2,100 cadets inside the iconic Habibullah Hall — brought with it a wave of nostalgia, humility, and deep responsibility.

The topic spanned eras and legends — Jumbo Majumdar, Mehar Singh, Peter Wilson, Donald Conquest — from the skies of NWFP and Burma to the valleys of Kashmir and the battles of Chittagong and Badin. I even shared the story of Uday Sondhi, India’s first amputee military pilot — a naval aviator who redefined resilience.

At the heart of the session was a simple but powerful framework: the DNA of Fortitude —
🔹 Perseverance
🔹 Resilience
🔹 Endurance
🔹 Adaptability
🔹 Humility

Each value illustrated through real lives — lived in uniform, often at great cost.

Speaking in Habibullah Hall, surrounded by three tiers of cadets and officers, was a reminder of how moments shape mindsets. I can only hope that a few of these stories stay with the cadets — not just as history, but as quiet companions in moments of doubt, grit, or decision.

Grateful to Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh, Commandant NDA, for his gracious presence and interaction. And to the NDA team for their impeccable hospitality and coordination.
