Jupiter: Technical Issues & Incoming Upgrades

Over the last few months, we have working hard behind the scenes for a series of infrastructure, process and ux upgrades to scale and harden the myraid number of systems that run Jupiter.

Recent Issues
The urgency of these efforts really became apparent in the last month, as several key issues emerged:

1. Severe lag in picking up new tokens and markets
2. Perps/JLP not functioning well due to oracle issues*
3. Transaction submission issues due to spam
4. Quote API lag due to overloading
5. Long wait times for strict list verification

Root Issues
These stem from a range of root issues, including but not limited to:
1. Solana network congestion causing onchain oracles to become stale and difficulties in creating the needed token accounts for our routing
2. Spamming of our RPC endpoints causing user txns to fail
3. Massive explosion in the number of tokens, markets being created
4. Spam tokens with overlapping names
5. Huge increase in the number of strict list applications, requiring hours everyday for team and cwg to filter through

Coming Upgrades
To tackle these issues, we are working on a series of major updates:
1. Metropolis: A total redesign of our markets and token system, ranging from the backend to frontend systems
2. Ecosystem token list: A rethink of the current strict list approach, looping in both data and the community to help filter out the right tokens
3. Oracle solutions: Reducing our reliance on onchain oracle option
4. Submission options: Both optimizing our backend txn submissions and also giving users more power on the frontend
5. Much improved observability: Having a set of full of metrics to understand and observe our systems at various levels

We will start rolling out the first of these efforts, starting with Metropolis tomorrow. Note that these efforts are on top of extensive upgrades that we had already done in preparation for the JUP launch.

Last but not least, we understand that many users, partners and traders leverage our platform in a large number of ways on a daily basis, and i would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused by these issues and especially if we have been slow to respond to them due to the overwhelming workload.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone's support and feedback, and will strive to be more communicative, have faster feedback channels and explain important decisions way ahead of time.
