Women had to fight to participate in the theater. Like the vast majority of professions, it was a male only profession. Women have only been able to play women for a relatively short amount of time. Add to that:

On Broadway 89% of playwrights are male and 11% female.

70% of directors are male 30% female.

63% principal roles go to males, and only 37% are female.

Women are still fighting hard for equal representation in theater and now out of the few roles written for women, this one is going to a man. 🙄
