“I’ve been selling leather goods for 40 years.
Although we came close to flooding 30 years ago, this is the first time our stores have been completely engulfed.
In the afternoon there had been signs of the flood coming. The floodwaters rose steadily. From Wednesday, Thursday till Monday it kept rising for a week. On Tuesday, It became really strong, catching us off guard and we heard from people at around 12am that it has surged. But it was too late, the flood had engulfed the whole neighborhood.
I live very far from the site of my business and when we came back everything was gone. It was too late. This time it flooded all our businesses. While some people managed to relocate their goods, the flood followed to other area and destroying them nonetheless. And they loss the goods too.
Some people have made losses of up to 40 million naira, others up to a 100 million. For me I lost 450 pieces of leather goods. Each at 25,000 naira. Only God knows how much for others.
It is a test from God. We just hope for help and now rely on government assistance for recovery.”
Flooding causes significant damage to infrastructure projects, particularly bridges, which has a ripple effect on local communities and disrupts daily life for those who rely on them.
A vital infrastructure is the Fori Bridge, which connects residential areas to Bama road, a link to the University of Maiduguri, and its destruction has forced many locals to risk walking on the damaged structure to reach their destination.

“I run a company named Hassan Yahaya and Sons Petroleum Company. We have been here in Gwange for 30 years.
Years ago, we saw the waters but it didn’t come too close to us.
But this time, we just saw the water coming this way a few days prior. We didn’t expect this to be different. We anticipated a similar scenario where the water would flow through without causing significant damage.
It came at night. Around 7pm, with the water coming down towards our filling station, we rushed and tried to remove some of reserves but unfortunately by 11am, the water overpowered us. We evacuated.
Our filling station became severely flooded. It has destroyed everything. There are reserves but the oil is laced with water.
Allah has willed it. It is test.
Currently we just sit at the station, spend the days here because there’s nothing left to do”

“When the flood came, it reached our house and later I discovered my shop was also flooded. I sell leather. The building behind me was my shop. Currently we are still living in the destroyed buildings. We want to try to repair the house and the shop as well. I am currently taking things I can use like the old doors. It will be useful for any new place I’m able to find.”

Many residents around Maiduguri, placed sandbags in the early hours of the floods believing it could be contained. Unfortunately the flood waters overwhelmed the city, and many fled to safer neighborhoods.
