History was grinding to a screeching halt for much of the 20th century. We are now floating in the aftermath, much like loose pieces in a rocket that has reached its apogee and is about to either come roaring down or detonate because a loose piece punctures something critical.
History is the converse of civilization. Civilization is the converse of history.
History happens in the gaps left by civilization. Total civilization means the end of history.
Some people can't wait to get back out there and dive right into society again.
Others, like me, are considering #NotGoingBack.
Let's start planning and strategizing for that moment of choice and the time afterwards.
@IonaItalia It's about agency. Both sexes are equally likely to be single, but women are more often single because they are choosy, while men are often single because they don't get chosen (ie. are "unattractive").
Being less choosy seems easier than being more attractive. This seems unfair.
Women just don't have the same lived experience as men, so they should stop commenting on man-related matters and instead listen and let themselves be educated.
Time to lobby for compulsory vasectomy for teenage boys worldwide. Reverse only when boys have passed a parenting test. (Credit for that goes to my nemesis @FPallopides.) Reduce humanity, reverse growth, keeping only the best.
It's that, or destroy civilization.
Time to transition out of the age of reproductive liberalism.
It's been a long one. Even back in "traditional" times, there was a broad consensus that pretty much every human had a right to reproduce.
Time to get over that.
Achievable dreams are more compelling than non-achievable ones. Even better, we can pretend that we don't even have to do anything for this dream to come to pass. We can talk ourselves, and let ourselves be talked, into the comforting idea that the world is going there anyway.
So many people long for the apocalypse. Even more seem to long for the post-apocalypse.
The first grows out of frustration and disgust with the lives we are leading. Meaningless, atomized lives in artificial, alienating environments. Burning it all down makes perfect sense.
What is special about this nostalgia is that, unlike almost all other nostalgias, it is achievable. The post-apocalypse is a place we can actually get to. We cannot get back to 1880s Britain or the Osman Empire or whatever; but we can get to the post-apocalypse if we try.
If someone brings joy to a millions of people by creating awesome art, but also brings suffering to a few people close to him by being a crappy person, the net result is still a much better world than one in which the artist was stomped out for their personal fault.
Say you're fighting for animal rights, and some movie star manages to convince a couple thousand people to go vegan -- but then it turns out that the movie star feasts on steak every day. Is that terrible? Search your feelings. The net result is still a huge win for animals.
