The Ruling on Supplicating for Death because of Life’s Hardships: Shaykh Muḥammed Ibn Ṣāliḥ ʿUthaymin

Question

A woman asks the following question in one of her letters:

“I have faced several problems in my life that have caused me to hate living. Whenever I become distressed, I turn to Allah, Most High, and ask Him to end my life as soon as possible. This remains my wish even now because I see no solution other than death. I feel that death alone will free me from this suffering. Is it unlawful for me to do this? Please guide me. May Allah benefit you.”

The Shaykh replied:

When a person wishes for death because of some harm that has befallen him, he has fallen into something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited. He ﷺ said:

“None of you should wish for death because of harm that has befallen him. If he feels that he must make such a wish, then let him say:

‘Allāhumma aḥyinī mā ʿalimta al-ḥayāta khayran lī, wa tawaffanī mā ʿalimta al-wafāta khayran lī.’

‘O Allah, keep me alive for as long as You know life to be better for me, and cause me to die when You know death to be better for me.’” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6351; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2680)

Therefore, it is not permissible for anyone afflicted by harm, distress, or a problem to wish for death. Rather, that person must remain patient, practise iḥtisāb (seek reward from Allah), and wait for relief from Him.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Know that victory comes with patience, relief comes with distress, and ease comes with hardship.” (Musnad Aḥmad 2803)

Anyone afflicted by a calamity should know that such calamities expiate the sins they have committed. No anxiety, grief, or harm afflicts a believer without Allah expiating some of their sins through it, even the prick of a thorn. (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5641; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2573)

Through patience and iḥtisāb (seeking reward from Allah), the person attains the high rank of those who remain patient. Allah, Most High, says concerning them:

“Give glad tidings to those who remain patient, those who, when a calamity befalls them, say: ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we shall return.’” (al-Baqarah 155–156)

As for this woman’s belief that death is the only solution to her problems, I consider this to be a mistaken view. Problems do not end with death. Rather, the calamities may become even greater after death.

Many people have died while suffering from problems and hardship, but they had transgressed greatly against themselves. They had not sought forgiveness for their sins and had not repented to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Their deaths therefore only hastened their punishment.

Had they remained alive and Allah had guided them to repentance, seeking forgiveness, patience, bearing hardships, and waiting for relief, this would have brought them a great deal of goodness.

Therefore, you, the questioner, must remain patient, seek reward from Allah, and wait for relief from Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Allah, Glorious and Exalted, says in His Book:

“Indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” (al-Sharḥ 5–6)

The Prophet ﷺ also said in an authentically reported hadith:

“Know that victory comes with patience, relief comes with distress, and ease comes with hardship.” (Musnad Aḥmad 2803)

Allah alone is the One whose help is sought.
