@musharbash_b I am theoretically able to plan my own routes. But I don't do that. I use the automatic route finder on my phone. Now I can do that with more things. Sounds good to me.
@bnielson01 With some charity, you could rephrase #1 to "things made of atoms don't ...". Though he should have included electrons and some other stuff.
@tonywestonuk The virtual racecar doesn't exist, but you experience it. So something is there to experience it. That which experiences is what we are talking about, not that which it experiences - like a sense of self. The idea of self and the racecar are irrelevant. You changed the topic.
@spicey_lemonade We don't know if this is possible, but it probably is. The answer is that we don't think neurons are conscious because of their intelligence or computation. We think they are conscious because I am (you are) conscious and other people are like me (you). Unlike a computer.
@jonatanpallesen "I think there should be a proper investigation [...] Also in case I'm wrong [...] we should be informed about that as well."
Sounds good to me. This is the difference between a sensible person and incompetent journalists who have forsaken their democratic responsibilities.
@shadesofsense@jonatanpallesen That still doesn't establish the exact claim made here, that this particular phenomenon of hurting handicapped people is specifically popular among Muslims in Denmark. It's not that I doubt it *could* be true, there just isn't evidence for it presented.
@shadesofsense@jonatanpallesen Even if that is true, the important part is demonstrating that. Just saying "everyone knows" isn't convincing. I'm willing to believe you if you what you say is true, but you still have to demonstrate it. Not you specifically, but in general.
@DrewPavlou The Nazis were responsible for what they did, but I don't think we can say that they forced silly Europeans to be silly today. It's a choice. The responsibility for policy is on the humans who make the choices. The Nazis are long gone, so they aren't making these choices.
We shouldn't torture AIs. Not because they can suffer, but because of what it does to ourselves to do it. It makes you the kind of person the rest of us need to be worried about. And you know that and it is not a good thing to know about oneself.
@LoginTerm@ctjlewis This is interesting but not relevant to consciousness. LLMs have a scratch pad thought track, which would be the equivalent of inner speech, but this doesn't make them conscious. Animals have no speech but this doesn't show that they are not conscious.
AI *can* be deterministic at temp=0, but people say that AI is inherently non-deterministic anyway. What they mean is that AI might try to solve a task and get it wrong but it's not a bug - it's expected to be fallible like a human is. That's fallible, not non-deterministic.
@RichardHanania Yeah returns are logarithmic to scale. This is fine. Log is actually better than we need to for AI to be a dramatic boost to humanity. The basic capability is already good enough that just some more data work is enough that most humans won't have to work again eventually.
@MrEwanMorrison You are mixing up intelligence and consciousness. These are unrelated. It's like mixing up stars and telescopes. They are quite different.
It will be difficult to educate children so that they understand that an AI has the behavior of people but isn't conscious in the way a human is. But this will be very important in the future. It's not idle philosophy anymore, it's something even the slow kid needs to know.
We don't know what consciousness is, but we still managed to avoid giving rocks or signs saying "I'm conscious" legal or moral rights. We will need to navigate our ignorance of consciousness intelligently enough to do the same for AI and for the same reasons.
