Let me tell you something you don't know. Under Uli Hoeness, Bayern has not sold a player for more than
€45 million.
Yeah I said it.
Uli Hoeneß once told Eintracht Frankfurt's board directly: "In the long run, you lose substance with every sale. It's nice to get 50 or 60 million once in a while, but what are the consequences?" He was not speaking theoretically.
Under his leadership, Bayern never received more than €45 million for a single player. That was a deliberate choice, not a financial constraint. And it produced one of the most consistently successful clubs in European football history.
The philosophy connects directly to something else he has said publicly, this time about ticket pricing. Bayern could charge €350 per season ticket instead of €120. The difference in revenue would be approximately €2 million per year.
His response to that idea was straightforward. "We do not believe that fans are like cows, which are milked. Football has to be for everyone." And then he added the line that should make English football uncomfortable: "That is the biggest difference between us and England."
These two positions are not separate. They are the same philosophy operating at different levels of the club. Do not extract maximum short-term value from every asset, whether that asset is a player contract or a supporter's loyalty, because the long-term cost of doing so is the substance of the club itself.
The atmosphere in the stadium, the emotional investment of the fanbase, the identity of the squad, these are not soft considerations. They are the commercial foundation that everything else is built on.
This is also where governance makes the difference. Germany's 50+1 rule means Bayern's majority ownership must remain with the members, the fans themselves. That structural protection is what allows a club president to turn down an extra €2 million in ticket revenue and call it the right decision. Without ownership rules that keep fans at the centre, the pressure to monetise everything eventually wins.

🚨OUR FOOTBALL FACILITIES MUST BEGIN TO ALIGN WITH THE SPORTS ECOSYSTEM WE ARE LOOKING TO ACHIEVE IN THE NEXT 20 YEARS.
We cannot continue to replicate what we already have.
Nigeria already has enough multi-sport complexes that can serve the National Sports Festival, African Games and other competitions requiring athletics, field events and multiple sporting facilities. With proper maintenance, these facilities can continue to serve those purposes.
But as a football-driven sporting nation, we also need to start developing proper football-centred stadiums, built to FIFA standards and designed around the needs of football.
Facilities that can serve the NPFL, youth competitions, grassroots development, academies and international football, while also giving us quality venues to comfortably host major CAF @CAF_Online and FIFA @FIFAcom competitions.
We can have four properly developed football stadiums capable of independently hosting the semi-finals and final of a CAF AFCON & FIFA major tournament, while the multi-sport complexes handle group-stage matches and other sporting events.
That gives us two things at once: specialised football infrastructure and functional multi-sport infrastructure.
It also gives us a better maintenance structure, because we are no longer asking every facility to do everything.
The objective should not be to replace the infrastructure we already have, but to complete the infrastructure structure we need.
If we are serious about the sporting ecosystem we want Nigeria to have in the next 20 years, then our facilities need to be planned accordingly.
