A Thai teacher's husband walked into a hospital with chest pain and walked out with nothing but a follow-up appointment. Hours later he collapsed and died in front of his wife and child. An autopsy found two blocked coronary arteries.

The case of "Kru Sai", a teacher with a large TikTok following, has gripped Thailand this week and forced a hospital to suspend a doctor and open an investigation.

According to her account, her husband developed a sharp pain running from his fingers up to the left side of his chest, and was sweating heavily. Colleagues urged him to get checked, and the couple went to San Camillo Hospital in Ban Pong, Ratchaburi.

What followed, she says, was a runaround. One doctor said he could not be examined until blood results came back. He was referred to an orthopaedic doctor because of an old tendon problem, who said this was not an orthopaedic matter and sent him back. He ended up with a general practitioner who, she says, never examined him or listened to his heart.

Instead, she says, the doctor put the symptoms down to anxiety, comparing him to someone scared of needles, and remarked that he was worked up because his wife was neurotic, a jab at her for asking questions and pushing for tests.

She offered to pay for a heart check herself. He was sent home with an appointment for several days later.

Her husband died that evening. The autopsy found two narrowed coronary arteries.

After her tearful videos spread across Thai social media, the hospital issued a statement on Friday expressing condolences, suspending the doctor involved and setting up an investigation committee. The doctor has reportedly apologised.

Kru Sai's response to the statement was seven words that have been shared everywhere: "Lucky him, he still gets to be suspended. The other person doesn't even get to breathe."

Beyond the grief, doctors who have weighed in point to a lesson that applies to everyone. Chest pain with heavy sweating is a cardiac red flag, and an ECG is a quick, cheap test. If it is ever refused and the pain feels wrong, go straight to an emergency room, and do not be embarrassed to insist.
