When should you use dialogue?
"Only use dialogue as a last resort. There was a scene in Transpecos, the first film we wrote together. They're in a truck. There's a whole long dialogue sequence about what's going to happen next. A lot of good dialogue in there.
But that scene became one line and some looks between them and it was so much better than all this stuff we'd written.
So ask: What's the least you can do that's going to give the most to the audience?"
What inspires beautiful cinematography?
Clint, the director of Oscar-nominated Train Dreams told me: "In shooting Train Dreams, we didn't have a lot of money.
So we were constantly thinking of ways to construct a frame that doesn't feel busy but feels empty when it should feel empty and not when it shouldn't be.
There's a time where Joel Edgerton's character is rebuilding something. We were shooting in an actual forest that'd been destroyed by a forest fire. It was an ashen pit with a bunch of dead trees in it, backlit by the sun. Ash and dust was kicking up but it felt a bit empty.
Where'd the inspiration for it come from? There's a shot from Ivan's Childhood, Tarkovsky's first film, where the boy is surroinded by all these jagged boards framing him out.
Our cinematographer, Adolpho Veloso found a long burnt stick on the ground that had a curve in it and set it on the ground between the camera and Joel, and put the camera down low. There was something about the shape of that stick within the frame that made the whole thing click together and somehow spoke to what the character was going through in that moment, and how he was hemmed in by his grief."
