The “21 Days Rule” (or 21 Trades Rule) is a trading discipline challenge.
Core Concept
Take exactly 21 trades using:
• The same set of trading rules
• The same indicator(s)
• The same timeframe
You do not switch strategies, add new indicators, change timeframes, or tweak the rules during these 21 trades.
Main Purpose
The goal is not primarily to make money. It is to:
• Build the habit of following your plan
• Develop execution confidence (trusting yourself to follow the rules under pressure)
• Stop strategy-hopping
• Make disciplined execution feel automatic
Many versions of this challenge are based on the popular idea that habits form in about 21 days (though research shows full automaticity often takes longer, often around 60+ days on average).
Typical Rules for Each of the 21 Trades
1. The trade must fully match your predefined plan (entry conditions are completely met).
2. Execution must be clean (proper position size, stop loss, risk management — no emotional adjustments, no revenge trading, no increasing size after losses).
3. Journal the trade immediately after closing it.
Important Practical Points
• It does not have to be one trade per calendar day. If there is no valid setup, skip the day. Completing 21 trades may take 30–60 days (or more).
• Never force trades just to hit the number of 21. Forcing trades defeats the purpose.
• You can do this on a demo account or live account (live is usually better because real money creates real emotional pressure).
• Focus on process adherence more than profit/loss during the challenge.
• After finishing the 21 trades, review how strictly you followed the rules. If you still break rules often, repeat the challenge.
Why It Works for Many Traders
Most traders fail not because of bad strategies, but because they cannot stick to one approach consistently. By forcing yourself to use the same rules, indicator, and timeframe for 21 trades, you eliminate the constant urge to switch systems and build the muscle of disciplined execution
