The three Members of the European Parliament who voted against the European Parliament today’s resolution calling on Russia to return kidnapped Ukrainian children to Ukraine:
- Fidias Panayiotou (Cyprus)
- Friedrich Pürner (Germany)
- Petar Volgin (Bulgaria)
The White House has put itself and the country in a bad situation but doesn’t realize it yet.
Around April 10th China to USA trade shut down.
It takes ~30 days for containers to go from China to LA.
45 to Houston by sea, 45 to Chicago by train.
55 to New York by sea.
That means that there are no economic effects of what was done on April 10th until about May 10th.
Around that time (it’s already started to happen) trucking work is going to dry up. Warehouses will start doing layoffs because no labor is needed to unload containers and some products will be out of stock, reducing the need for shipping labor.
All this will start in the Los Angeles area.
After about 2 weeks, it’ll start hitting Chicago and Houston.
Let’s say the White House, after 3 weeks, changes its mind, on May 31st.
“This isn’t working out like we thought it would. Tariffs back to 0.”
Let’s say China says “bygones be bygones, we’ll go back to how things were”.
Let’s say every factory in China that got screwed by their orders being cancelled says the same thing “no problem, we’ll make and ship”.
The problem is, even under the most favorable conditions of China and the factories restarting economic ties as though nothing happened, it will be at least another 30 days before economic activity is revived.
And that’s just in LA.
In Chicago/Houston, you’ll need to wait another 45 days.
New York, at that point, will still be getting containers from before April 10th, they will then have 50 days (May 31 minus April 10) of zero economic activity at the ports, in trucking of Chinese goods, in warehousing.
The whole situation is a bit like lockdowns. Once you shut down, it takes a long time to get economic activity back to where it was, if you ever can.
And again, this assumes, that China and its factories, which make things you can’t buy elsewhere, will start right back up again as though nothing happened, which is unlikely.
It’s almost like we’re speeding towards a brick wall but the driver of the car doesn’t see it yet.
By the time he does, it’ll be too late to hit the brakes.
# the nightmare bicycle
imo, the most important idea in product design is to avoid the "nightmare bicycle".
imagine a bicycle where the product manager said "people don't get math so we can't have numbered gears - we need to have labeled buttons for gravel mode, downhill mode, ..."
this is a hypothetical "nightmare bicycle" that Andy diSessa imagines in his book Changing Minds.
as he points out: it would be terrible! we'd lose the intuitive understanding of how to use the gears to solve any situation we encounter. which mode do you use for gravel + downhill??
turns out, anyone can understand numbered gears totally fine after a bit of practice. people are capable!
along the same lines - one of the worst misconceptions in product design is that a microwave needs to have a button for every thing you could possibly cook: "popcorn", "chicken", "potato", "frozen vegetable" bla bla bla.
you really don't! you can just have a time (and power) button. people will figure out how to cook stuff.
good designs expose systematic structure; they lean on their users' ability to understand this structure and apply it to new situations. we were born for this.
bad designs paper over the structure with superficial labels that hide the underlying system, inhibiting their users' ability to actually build a clear model in their heads.
Hard Facts:
Europeans are now talking loudly of a new muscular antithesis, independent of the U.S. Promises, promises—given that would require Europeans to prune back their social welfare state, frack, use nuclear, stop the green obsessions, & spend 3-5% of their GDP on defense.
We do not need Putin's permission to send troops to Ukraine, and Ukraine does not need his permission to invite us. Our dignity and Ukraine's sovereignty must be maintained, and giving Putin control over the deployment of our armed forces is unlikely to bring peace.
That time @marcorubio explained how USA, Russia & the UK promised Ukraine to provide for their defense forever if they gave up the huge stockpile of nuclear weapons left in the country after the Soviet Union fell.
Good times.
Romania and the Romanian justice system have embarked on a hell of a fight today.
We are the first country to pursue a candidate who is a blatant russian agent meant to destabilize our nation from the inside and fracture our relationship with our allies.
Not even the mighty USA had the courage to do that.
Soon, all the forces of evil and lies in the world, backed by millions upon millions of dollars will tell the millions of morons in the west that Calin Georgescu is a victim and that our country is a dictatorship.
We need your help to spread the word, he and his team have undermined our fragile democracy and we are fighting to hold on to it by the skin of our teeth.
Our justice system is not perfect. But as a Romania citizen, who pays taxes and wants to live in a civilize country, I FULLY SUPPORT THE ARREST AND LEGAL PROSECUTION OF CALIN GEORGESCU

Something that might be helpful to understand why I am critical of many people with whom I agree on many other issues over their commentary on Ukraine.
When the invasion first happened, because of my family connections to both Russia and Ukraine a lot of the people who are currently giving you their takes called me for my opinion. They usually did so with the words "I don't know anything about this conflict, can you explain the basics to me?" or something to that effect.
Then, a week later I saw them confidently giving their opinions in TV studios, on podcasts and social media. This includes both people who were saying things that align with my views and people who were saying the opposite of what I believe.
Most of your reality is fabricated by people whose job it is to have opinions in public. They might be good and right about the trans issue, for example, and they gain your trust over time by saying brave and accurate things on that. They might be good on free speech. And so on.
But have you noticed that when a new issue emerges, suddenly within a very short time window, they all have an opinion on that issue with 10/10 confidence? And, miraculously, that opinion aligns with their political tribe's opinion?
The people at the top of one tribe used Ukraine to virtue signal by sticking Ukrainian flags everywhere and saying "Slava Ukraine". And the overwhelming majority of people in that tribe immediately adopted that approach even though they couldn't find Ukraine on a map.
The people at the top of the other tribe then virtue signalled to their tribe using Ukraine. They talked about "biolabs", "Ukraine isn't a democracy" and "Zelensky is a dictator". And the overwhelming majority of people in that tribe immediately adopted that approach even though they couldn't find Ukraine on a map.
There are many people whose views on these issues are sincerely held and the result of real research. I totally respect differences of opinion based on this.
What I don't respect, is people who don't understand why they think what they think and are simply following the herd they happen to be part of.
I will also add that my posts on this have, on occasion, been needlessly moralistic. That is because it feels to me like many people are talking about this like it's a football game and not a conflict in which millions of people, some of whom I know and love, on both sides, are suffering and being killed.
But, I also know that to continue to bring people over to my point of view, it is better that I am respectful and welcoming. I'll keep working on that.
Mario Draghi barrels into European politicians and leaders for their inaction:
"You say no to public debt. You say no to the single market. You say no to create a capital market union. You can't say no to everything...You ask me what's best to do…I don’t know, but do something"
@HikiCoder@Sentdex Why not a 16-32 core single-socket Epyc 9004 box? 460 GB/s memory bandwidth. Cheap memory like $2000 for 384GB. Probably enough compute performance for single-user inference. And it is 200-300W.
This may be the most e/acc speech of all time... unfathomably based 🥹🇺🇸🚀

Boom! We cracked it! Today we are introducing Boomless Cruise—supersonic flights up to 50% faster with no audible sonic boom.
We quietly (har har) demo'd this on XB-1's first supersonic flight—three times actually. 🧵👇
