One of the great ironies of India is that we worship our rivers, yet rarely trust the water that flows into our homes.
Which is why Puri’s transformation fascinated me. An entire city where people can apparently drink straight from the tap.
And this change didn’t take decades. It happened over just a few years because political leadership, administrative execution and community participation all moved in sync.
A key part of the story is the role played by the ‘Jal Sathis’ local women who became guardians of the city’s water quality and helped build public trust in the system.
My #MondayMotivation this week comes from leaders & participative citizens who proved that governance can genuinely improve the quality of everyday life

On this Utkala Dibasa, did you know Odisha is truly one of a kind!!
• Odisha is home to world’s second oldest rock (~4.2 billion years old)
• World’s largest mass nesting site for Olive Ridley turtles
• Hosts the world’s longest earthen dam
• ~70% of India’s saltwater crocodiles live here
• Odia - one of India’s oldest classical languages
• Odissi - among the oldest classical dance forms
• Chilika - Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon
• Rare melanistic (black) tigers found only here
• India’s advanced missiles are tested from Odisha coast (ITRs at Chandipur & Abdul Kalam Island)
• Largest producer of minerals in India
• World’s largest seated hockey stadium
• Bhuban (Dhenkanal) - Asia’s largest village
• Nandankanan - first zoo in India to breed white & melanistic tigers
And above all - Odisha was the first state in India formed on a linguistic basis 🇮🇳
Be proud. Be Odia.

Greetings on the special occasion of Utkala Dibasa. Odisha is a state that stands tall as a timeless symbol of cultural as well as spiritual greatness. Odia music, art and literature have enriched India in countless ways. The people of Odisha, known for their determination, simplicity and warmth, have made remarkable contributions across fields. May Odisha keep scaling new heights of progress in the times to come.
India continues to grow as a global sporting destination 🇮🇳
Hosting the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar is a proud moment and a big step forward in our Olympic journey and sports ecosystem.
Happy to share that with prudent fiscal management, #Odisha was No-1 in the country in @NITIAayog’s Fiscal Health Index for the year 2023-24. It’s a pride for all of us that Odisha not only led the nation but also was comprehensively ahead with a score of 73.1 over even the 2nd rank State that could achieve a score of only 54.
It is matter of great satisfaction for me that Odisha had charted this journey from near bankruptcy in 2000 to lead the chart in every parameter which no #DoubleEngine govt could achieve in the country. From a precarious fiscal situation to becoming the top performer in fiscal health, Odisha’s journey reflected vision, and transformative governance under the principles of #5T.
Highlight of our governance can be seen in every parameter of fiscal health-whether it is quality of expenditure, revenue mobilisation, fiscal prudence and reducing loan burden-emerging as exemplar state.
This sustained fiscal stability empowered the state to invest in many people-centric initiatives like #BSKY, #KALIA, #MissionShakti, #SkillDevelopment, #OdishaSchoolTransformation, tribal development, #DisasterManagement, infrastructure development, irrigation projects, poverty alleviation initiatives and funding of our own food security scheme-without waiting for handouts from Centre. I thank the people of Odisha for being partners in this transformative journey.
But now I am worried with the way the Odisha double engine govt is mis-managing finances, pushing the State in the path of bankruptcy and push back the development momentum to 25 years back. May good sense prevail.

#DidYouKnow Odisha Police is the only police force in the world to run a pigeon service for communication, and it is still preserved.
There is an interesting true story:
A pigeon carried the Prime Minister’s message and delivered it 265 km away in just 5 hours and 20 minutes.
On April 13, 1948, the then PM of India, Nehru, was in Sambalpur, Odisha, and needed to urgently send instructions to Cuttack, 265 km away.
At 6 AM, a carrier pigeon took off carrying his handwritten message from Sambalpur, and by 11:20 AM, it had reached Cuttack.
When Nehru arrived later and saw his original message, along with the same pigeon, he was astonished and delighted.
Though officially discontinued in 2008, Odisha Police still keeps trained homing pigeons for ceremonial and heritage purposes…the only police force in the world to do that!
