We haven’t grasped how deep the internal security crisis in the country is because we use words that mask its intensity, such as “goons” and “insecurity”.
So what if we called it what it is, “state-organized armed militia”, “state-funded terrorism”, “state-sponsored violence”?
Kenya has introduced a new 25% tax on software subscriptions.
One of the principles of a good tax system is simplicity.
Taxes should be easy to understand. Easy to comply with. And inexpensive to administer.
Finance Act 2026 has introduced new rules for software subscriptions.
• The Act now classifies payments for software licences and software subscriptions as royalties.
- As a result, every time you pay an overseas software company, you are now required to withhold 20% tax and remit it to KRA.
- Then pay the software company the remaining 80%.
For example.
Suppose you pay Google, Amazon or Microsoft USD 1,000 every year for software subscriptions.
The law says:
• Confiscate 20%, USD 200.
• Remit it to KRA.
Then pay the software company USD 800.
There is only one problem, however.
- Software subscriptions are paid either in full or not at all.
Google does not care that you have complied with the Kenyan tax laws. You either pay them 1,000 USD or go home.
So what happens to continue using the software and keep KRA happy?
- You pay Google their full USD 1,000.
In doing so, KRA treats the USD 1,000 as the net amount after withholding tax. That means the original invoice is deemed to have been USD 1,250. How?
Ulikua unaangalia mwalimu na ruler ukiuliza hesabu ya cross multiplication itakusaidia aje maishani. Ona Sasa.
If USD 1,000 = 80%,
Then 100% = USD 1,250.
The withholding tax therefore becomes USD 250.
Meaning:
• Google gets their full USD 1,000.
• Then you go back to your pocket to pay KRA USD 250.
Total software cost = USD 1,250.
In effect, the law has quietly introduced a 25% tax on many software subscriptions.
Even if a small taxpayer genuinely wanted to comply, how exactly are they supposed to comply when the giant software company insists on being paid in full?
This is the new law. Adjust accordingly.

Can police in Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, and Tanzania learn from their counterparts here?
🚨 JUST IN: KRA has officially changed the deadlines for filing annual tax returns in Kenya.
Millions of Kenyans will now have different filing dates depending on their tax status.
📌 New deadlines:
• Nil Returns (no taxable income): By January 31
• Salaried employees (PAYE only): By April 30. Most returns will be pre-filled on iTax - simply verify and submit.
• Businesses & taxpayers with other income (side hustles, consultancy, rental income, etc.): June 30 remains the deadline.
This replaces the old system, where almost everyone filed by June 30.
Please read, save, and share so your family and friends don't miss the new deadlines and end up paying unnecessary penalties. Adios.
At km 36, I found an elite almost fainting, she requested for my water which I immediately gave her… only to realize that the next time I would be seeing water was 4 km away 💀
Luckily, at around km 37, a runner on the other side headed towards JKIA, was gracious enough to give me their water. I hope they did not suffer for it.
A few meters later, someone asked me for the same bottle… and I just remember saying to myself, Woi, Tutafika lini… it was really bad!

I'm reading about how the British, in the early 1900s, used to confiscate livestock in Turkana numbering 5,000, up to 16,000. And then when the Samburu raided the Turkana for 300 heads of cattle, the British fined them. Yani, it was ok for the British to steal cattle but not for other Africans to conduct cattle raids. Of course, the math wasn't mathing.
The Turkana successfully staged a tax boycott against the colonialists, until the colonialists had to withdraw the tax. But in 1915, the British confiscated a staggering 130,000 head of cattle from the Turkana and killed over 400 warriors.
Towards north eastern, the British used to confiscate livestock of Kenyan Somalis so that Europeans breeds would dominate the region and Somalis would be rendered poor due to loss of livestock.
The British hated pastoralism (@m_ogada often reminds us that the wazungu and GoK still do) because it made the communities difficult to control, to reduce to forced labor and extract taxes from. So they attacked their livelihoods. And they brought rinderpest.
Northern Kenya was governed as "closed districts." People from those regions were not allowed to leave without permission from the colonialists. The act was repealed in guess when? 1997. Yes.
And then I remembered Huduma Namba and SHA in which the government proposed means testing, where people's ID cards and SHA contributions included data on the livestock they owned.
What I feel reading this is a mixture of anger and horror at that level of looting, surely. And anger that GoK can still be thinking like this in the 21st century. And that this information is not readily accessible. Eesh.
