This was what happened when I was scheduled for an appendectomy. The HMO insisted it wasn't covered, my friends and school mates had to raise funds for surgery. Only for our HMO to call my dad to tell him it was covered and hospital told us they've closed account for the year.
I was scheduled for a procedure sometimes in 2024. I went to the hospital and after all was said and done, I was asked to pay 300k.
I told the hospital to reach out to my HMO provider for the procedure, but they said the HMO didn’t approve that I have to pay out of pocket. It was surprising to hear that cos I knew it was a covered procedure, but I didn’t argue, I just paid the money myself and a few weeks after, i resumed in the office and I went to report the case to HR. She was furious.
She said the HMO was not supposed to reject, that the worse they could have done was settle half of the bill.
She sent a mail to the HMO and they responded that the hospital never contacted them regarding the procedure.
Apparently, the hospital lied to me because they preferred out of pocket payments to HMO payments.
Now imagine if I was not buoyant enough to sort the bills myself.
So when people say these things, it is not a lie.
Not to be that person, but our literary/visual understanding of romantic expressions as Africans are very much defined by white standards. Yes, even in love, we are colonised.
Otherwise what concerns an African woman with hair tucking? Her Afro (or braids) don’t move that way 😭
