Why First Nations Funding Needs a Complete Overhaul

The #Cowichan Tribes are asking the federal government to handle a large illegal dumping site on their land filled with garbage, construction debris, trailers, general household waste and industrial waste. They call it a long-term problem that has built up over generations. This comes after years of ignored warnings and meetings that led to no real action. One member of the tribe received a pollution prevention order for the site from the government. It is frustrating to see a First Nation complain about environmental damage by their own hand, on their own land while expecting federal money to fix it. This case is not unique. It shows a pattern of financial problems over the past decade that requires a total review of First Nations funding. Audit every dollar given since the treaties were signed. For all future money, require detailed income and expense reports that are fully public, like what any business must provide.

Camadians understand that not every First Nations leader is misusing federal funds for personal gain. Most are working hard to manage communities with difficult histories that would challenge anyone. But too many are reinforcing the negative stereotypes they complain about as unfair and racist. The image is of a group that takes advantages while basic needs go unmet, like homes without proper water or shelter. These actions create widespread doubt that affects all First Nations. It is not prejudice. It is based on repeated reports from the last ten years.

For example, a recent audit of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations in Saskatchewan found 34 million dollars in questionable, ineligible, or unsupported expenses. Leaders there are now demanding explanations, as if federal money comes without rules on how to spend it. The federal Indigenous procurement program, meant to help First Nations businesses, has major gaps that allow non-Indigenous companies to fake partnerships and avoid fraud checks. There are ongoing issues of corruption, such as mismanaging funds, fixing elections, and hiring family members at places like First Nations University. These problems happen across the country. Identity fraud is also rising, with people falsely claiming Indigenous status to take resources from those who qualify, leaving real communities short. You have to wonder why anyone would want to lie about being indigenous... that is until you see the lack of transparency, fiscal expectations and accountability asked of First Nations in exchange for billions of tax dollars and government funded infrastructure. They do it because they can and if anyone pushes for proof of indigenous lineage you just need to slap a racist label on the offending rax payer footing that bill, or cite some kind of reconciliation demand to shut down scrutiny. Indigenous business support programs have faced accusations of misuse, leading to calls for investigations because funds do not always go where they should.

These cases are not rare mistakes. They create doubt about the entire system. At the same time, federal spending on Indigenous programs has grown from 11 billion dollars a year ten years ago to over 30 billion dollars now. This money should have ended problems like unsafe water and housing shortages long ago. In 2003, the government promised 1.6 billion dollars over five years to fix water issues, but many communities still have boil-water advisories. The Auditor General has reported failures in housing. Government claims progress with more funding, but basic services like emergency response and clean water remain unsolved. There is no reason for these issues to continue. First Nations get tax benefits that even low-income Canadians do not have, such as no income tax. This is not fair treatment. It is unlimited funding that relies on taxpayers, who now feel like they are just funding sources with no end in sight.

The situation is unfair in other ways. The people who settled Canada did not just arrive. They built roads, power systems, health care, and pension plans through hard work from immigrants and workers. After using these services for generations, some First Nations now use courts to demand BC land back, including all the built infrastructure like roads, power lines and sewage lines. It is like using someone's services, then demanding everything for free while refusing to pay or maintain it. Canadians are fed up. The constant calls for more money, more apologies, and more independence, while problems like dumping sites and bad water continue, build resentment. This leads to situational and broad racism, not from history or differences, but from repeated failures to use funds properly while continuing to hold out a hand demanding ever more like its an entitlement. Newsflash: its not an entitlement and Canadians are growing weary of that mindset.

In today's world, with tools for tracking money easily, it is time to act. First, fix the funding system completely. Recover any misused money, require strict financial reports, and link grants to clear results, like ending water problems. This will punish those who waste funds and help those who use them well. Second, if traditional values matter so much, like protecting land and water or living simply, then commit fully. Join Canada as one nation, sharing responsibilities and benefits equally without special rules. Or, if that does not appeal, return to pre-contact life without modern items like phones, medicine, or roads.

Use the benefits or reject them, but do not demand both without responsibility.

Canadians are fully aware that it is not every First Nations band council planning the next misuse of funds; most are struggling with the real difficulties of reconciliation. But when too many act out the negative stereotype of theft and waste, it damages the reputation of all First Nations. That has to stop. Audit all past funding, require full accounting for every future dollar, and decide: join Canada as one equal nation, or return to living without modern benefits like technology, medicine, and infrastructure. Anything short of that just keeps the problems going, and everyone loses. You dont get to enjoy the benefits of colonialism while demanding special treatment for a way of life rarely practiced in at least the last half decade, and expect everyone to be peachy about it. The gig is up. Smart Canadians that dont follow every woke trend for the sake of following a woke trend understand what is happening. The long con is going to be iver very soon at the rate the Liberal government of Canada is spending and borrowing.
