TOMORROW, 8/19 from 6:30-8:30 pm in Chicago:
“Building a Liberatory Library”
Join Roy Kinsey (Rapbrary); Danielle Mullen (Semicolon Books); Lani Maldonado; Denise Ruiz and Tracie D. Hall (Litanies for Survival) discussing how libraries and bookstores can be tools for freedom.
Friends at conferences - please do not assume that the people that you talk to do not know anything. I just got told that I should read what Stanton et al found about pain.
I. Am. Stanton.
An Emory University competition awarded two students $10,000 for their AI study tool. Six months later, the school suspended the creators for that same tool. Now one is suing. https://t.co/FYUU8BHjzM via @WSJ@EmoryUniversity
I used the chatbot arena data from @lmsysorg to create a visualization of LLM’s Elo rating changes. You can see:
1. The gap between various companies/open source projects is narrowing.
2. The major players are gradually becoming the various big tech companies.
What in the hay-ell Louisiana!?!? Librarians!!! It is time to vote as well as start considering running for political positions on the local, state, and federal level.
Freshman Rep. Kellee Dickerson has filed a bill that would make it a crime punishable by up to two years in prison to use public funds to pay for an @ALALibrary memberships or for attendance at an ALA event #lalege#lagov
Wherever there is an effort to take away power and to disenfranchise —restricting the right to read, dictating what to read, censoring writers, bombing, burning, or defunding libraries — become primary tactics.
Libraries are under attack because they are a threat to tyranny.
Some useful ways to engage ChatGPT or other AI writing tools (paper below):
1)As a conversational partner for brainstorming. E.g. List some possible ethical issues in the field of nursing.
2)As a writing coach. E.g. Read my draft of this paper so far and identify issues with the sentence structure and argument.
3)As a proofreader. E.g. Read this section of my paper looking for grammatical errors.
4)As an outliner. E.g. Give me an outline for a research paper based on my tentative research question: What should be done about the problem of racial profiling in police work?
In this so-called ‘information age’ one thing we must understand is that there are power structures and power plays that rely almost completely on an unread and disinformed public.
@NoetheMatt Or, take any job that will “get your foot in the door.” Why did I just spend thousands of dollars and years on a degree if I’m not going to find the right fit the first time?
