Democrats have a 5-2 majority on the court; two voted with Republicans to create this 4-3 decision.

This is the correct decision based on the law, but Pennsylvania needs to change the law. Requiring a date is dumb; if the ballot is signed, completed, and returned before the deadline, it shouldn't matter what date it is filled out.

That said, the state was a little proactive this year and is printing the "2024" part of the date on the envelope. Now, the voter can only screw up the month and date (which a few thousand will still manage to do).

It is an essential state from an electoral POV, yet PA election law is easily the worst in the country. There is poor data transparency, a lack of in-person early voting, absentee processing that cannot start until election day, and now tossing mail ballots if they're not dated within an 8-week window.
