Born in 1936, Dr. Dolores Margaret Richard Spikes was a mathematician, teacher, and university administrator. She made history multiple times as an African American woman and received numerous awards and honors.
Cox then became a professor at Howard University and later the Universityโs head of the Department of Mathematics. While he died in 1969, his legacy lives on to this day, one of the most notable being the Elbert F. Cox Scholarship Funds for Black undergraduates with math majors.
Elbert Frank Cox of Indiana earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics on September 26, 1925, making him the first Black man in the world to ever do so. After acquiring the degree, Cox began to teach at West Virginia State College, where he met his wife, Beulah Kaufman.
