Though my family weren’t farmers, I had the privilege of growing up on a picturesque farm property in rural Ontario. And hidden behind our white, wooden driveshed, was a small patch of wetlands. This glorious little muskeg was just small enough that adults could be excused for overlooking it. But a child’s eyes can perceive such features with a different level of utility than a grown-up’s might, for an abundance of frogs and turtles would pay me visit from the bosom of that swampy paradise.

Given my upbringing, it might come as no surprise that the topic of my first book should revolve around the backyard critters which I had so much joy catching in my formative years.

Back in the Puritan retrival and New Calvinism movements, there was a heavy emphasis on bringing back powerful, faithful, unashamed preaching.

I don't think that impulse was wrong.

But I am increasingly convinced we are in an ecclesiological crisis.

Evangelicals have lost the profound meaning, purpose and role that Lord's Day, corporate and covenantal worship is supposed to play in the rhythm, culture and power of the christian life.

This is why they don't understand why things like age segregated worship are so egregious.

Amongst God-fearing Christians, everyone���s a Calvinist when it comes to their earthly government. Even in a democracy, Christians have to reconcile Christ’s words to Pilate that nobody holds any office unless God gives it. And so often, bad leaders are thought of as judgement, or trials, or some other divine prescription, while goodly leaders are considered a blessing. So, after going to the polls, the garden variety evangelical today winks at the mysterious intersection of man’s own election and God's sovereignty in appointing our leaders, but chooses not to chase that question to where it naturally leads — what about the salvation of our very souls?
