The exposure of the 4K disc looks closer to this image I snapped with my phone. @BobbyCastro1994 is doing this for engagement, not for accuracy. He is incompetent.

Film scanners were primarily designed to scan negative or IPs. Only way to properly see what a 35mm print should look like is to project it with director/DP approving the image.

The blacks are crushed, the highlights are magenta, you can’t make any detail out in what is such a critical moment. Digital scans of release prints are unreliable references.

They even have an editorial note on the page saying “Our usual uniform software cannot do justice to these images.” The HDR to SDR tone mapping is very poor and way too dark. Makes the 4K look like 💩.

Seems like poor tone mapping from HDR to SDR. What method are you using to extract these stills?

Whatever print was used for this demonstration is suffering from significant color dye fading. Original poster @BobbyCastro1994 is significantly misleading his audience.

This is a shot I took from my iPhone off a calibrated LG CX 4K TV. If viewing from an iPhone display in a dimly lit room, brightness should be at approximately 50% to get exposure approximate to what the eye sees.

A scan of an original release print? If so, on what film scanner and how was it calibrated? What was the capture format? Log or linear? Who applied corrections to the image? The 4K restoration also originated from a 35mm scan FYI.

@NextBestPicture We typically find older studio transfers to be too magenta under close inspection. The final answer print or IB tech print is what should be referenced in this case. If available, Criterion and WB often make efforts to reference prints.
