I’ve been holding a large international tech stock for a decade. It’s split and bagged multiple times and now my holding is substantial. I’m now considering if I need to sell to trigger the current tax liability and then rebuy.
I’ll be hit with a substantial tax bill + brokerage + FX fees and the net result is that I will have a lower capital base to build wealth for retirement.
All these changes do is tell me that I should buy a Porsche, go on holidays and upgrade my house instead of sacrificing and provisioning for my future.
Retrospective tax policy drastically changes my views of sovereign risk in Australia and my investments will be allocated accordingly.
