Well, isn't that something special? They're connected to many historical figures, and not only that, but they're also descended from Blanche of Lancaster and Constance of Castile, wives of John of Gaunt
As I don’t have any #RachaelsHistoryFacts for today, I thought I’d re-post a previous ‘standalone’ that I wrote.
I’m still playing ‘catch up’, but I’m working on some new ‘standalone’ content alongside my regular content…but with circumstances as they’ve been recently, I’m a bit behind on everything, apologies.
I know a lot will have probably seen this before but I thought it would be interesting for my new followers 🥰
It shows how Catherine, The Princess of Wales is not only the 16 x Great Granddaughter, but also a ‘double descendant’ of Katherine Swynford.
I really enjoyed researching and writing this post.
I’ve split it into 3 separate parts.
I hope you enjoy reading it,
Rachael ♥️
Part 1.
Katherine Swynford famously had an affair with John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, the fourth son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainault.
Katherine and John went on to have four children, three sons and one daughter.
Their children's surname ‘Beaufort’ came from the name of the now demolished Beaufort Castle, a property in Champagne, France that John of Gaunt had sold years earlier.
After the death of his second wife, John married Katherine on January 13th 1396, at Lincoln Cathedral.
After the marriage their four children were legitimised by both John's nephew, King Richard II and Pope Boniface IX.
After John's eldest son by his first wife Blanche of Lancaster, Henry Bolingbroke, deposed his first cousin, King Richard II in 1399, and became the new King, Henry IV, he inserted the phrase “excepta regali dignitate” (except royal status) in the documents that had legitimised his Beaufort half-siblings.
That phrase ‘supposedly’ barred them from the throne.
Regardless, the descendants of Katherine and John are significant in both English and Scottish history.
Katherine and John's only daughter, Joan Beaufort, was the maternal grandmother of two English kings from the House of York, the brothers King Edward IV and King Richard III.
The Tudor dynasty was descended directly from their eldest son, John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset, great-grandfather of King Henry VII.
Following are both the Paternal and Maternal lines.

@NathenAmin Who would have believed that Lancastrian blood would mix with Tudor blood, and that they would have a child carrying the blood of both? Besides, the Tudor brothers were brothers of the Lancastrian king. Life and fate are unpredictable.

@nabulionee2@MedievalScholar His great-uncle Henry IV, King of England, and his cousins Henry V and VI, Kings of England, meant he had no need for his brother-in-law, as he had blood ties and kinship with the Kingdom of England before his brother-in-law became King of England
@NathenAmin Regarding the claims, henry iv's usurpation of the throne paved the way for all of this. anyone with a drop of royal blood can make a claim so there's no difference between henry vii and them. I don't care about the legitimacy or right of the claims
@NathenAmin I don't doubt his claim ! I mean, at that time he was being called the last Lancastrian heir and Edward IV was also obsessed with capturing him. my curiosity isn't that I doubt his claim but that even though he wasn't the last, the Yorkists were obsessed with capturing him
@NathenAmin also, there's a permanent friendship treaty between England and Portugal; if they thought of invading England or making any claims they would destroy this treaty. therefore, there is only one Lancastrian rival to Henry and that is Maximilian I☠️ this duo🔥
@NathenAmin I understand why Spain hasn't made any claims; they were in the midst of a war and couldn't afford to engage in another. Portugal, on the other hand, had ended its war with Spain four years prior and wasn't prepared for another+
@Benjwewd @englandmarchon @KevinASchofield and Edward I and his father made Edward the Confessor the saint of England, . Edward I also described the French as stupid, just as he was descended from the Normans and the Vikings. He is descended from the Anglo-Saxons, so there is no need to throw out the accusations+
