The tragic murder of 23-year-old Kayla Hodgson was rooted entirely in severe jealousy. The perpetrator, 31-year-old Sakiyna Thompson, became enraged after learning Hodgson was dating her ex-partner and, crucially, after Hodgson had blocked her on social media. This anger led to a calculated plan: in July 2022, Thompson flew from New York to Fort Lauderdale, booked a rideshare under a fake name, and arrived at Hodgson's Tamarac apartment complex around 5 a.m.. She was clearly preparing for a confrontation, as surveillance showed her disguised in a wide-brimmed hat, a mask, and gloves.
Inside the apartment, the attack began when Thompson confronted Hodgson, demanding, "Why did you block me?". The state alleged that Hodgson cried out, "Please, stop!" as the struggle turned violent and Thompson began stabbing her. Hodgson was ultimately found dead with dozens of stab wounds. At trial, Thompson took the stand and claimed she was about two months pregnant at the time, arguing she "blacked out" and acted in self-defense. However, prosecutors argued that the disguise and the one-way travel indicated a "mission to kill," and the jury ultimately rejected Thompson’s self-defense claim. The conviction of first-degree murder led to Thompson being sentenced to a mandatory life sentence, closing the case that began with a jealous, premeditated act.
