"On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?"

"He referred to the minimal techno, drones and noise of Pan Sonic as 'horsemeat rockabilly.'
He and Ilpo would sometimes eat raw horsemeat soaked in vodka.
At a factory where he worked Mika stole essence-laden fortified alcohol. He liked the pineapple-flavored stuff best.

He was 5’5”. He served in WW1, and then was chief of patrolmen for the Portland Police Bureau after a stint as a pharmacist. Enlisted in WW2 even though he was in his 40s with a wife and two sons, and served as a Seabee. Named Everett (my middle name) but everyone called him Doc.
Looking at one of my great-grandpa's WW2 draft card and in the section for "name and address of person who will always know your address," he wrote in all-caps: "CITY OF PORTLAND." That's fuckin' right.
“There’s an opening? At the bar.”
The doorman looks him over again and then steps aside. Knox crosses. He holds the paper still. Held in two hands, a totem. The doorman shuts and bolts the door behind him.
Adore this beautifully evocative tale of displacement, cosmic events, and the tentative forging of unlikely friendships by one of my fave writers, @AHightowersight. Read it now on Hobart!
