You are looking at the echo of a creature that lived 190 million years ago.

An Asteroceras ammonite is an extinct marine animal from the early Jurassic period. It is related to modern creatures like squid and octopus, but unlike them, it had a coiled, spiral shell.

At places like Charmouth Beach, part of the famous Jurassic Coast in the UK, you are walking over rocks that were once ancient seabeds. This ammonite would have lived in a warm, shallow sea, surrounded by other prehistoric life.
